The Role
At times I was left to do my own thing - if I went again I would make sure I kept pestering them for something to do
There were one or two individuals that really stood out and went out of their way to help me, but I think the others didn't get to know me as well as they could have done because they have a different work experience person every week
The editors were very busy as you might expect, but they were very helpful and gave me some good tips about getting into journalism
As I mentioned before sometimes I was left to do my own thing, not always intentionally, but when I did get something to do it was really fun and interesting
I was given stories and press releases to write up, was sub-editing work written by other reporters and calling up contacts to find out more information
I learnt a lot about how a local newspaper works and how a newsroom in general operates. I enjoyed knowing things the day or week before the general public were being informed, and got to use industry computer software.
The Company
As much of the work is individual, you don't get a lot of chance to mix, but when you did it was a great atmosphere. There was only one time where it was a bit awkward, as a member of staff was being disciplined by the editor
They have been doing placements for years so they know what they are doing
I did the placement before I started my course, so they did train me up a little, but I think if I went back now they would be able to do more as I already have the basics covered
I think it would be interesting and fun to work there
The Culture
Only because I was the only one there at that time!
Again I was the only person there at that time! But I live in the area anyway so it was average!
Bournemouth is great for socialising, it has lots of clubs and pubs
I didn't look for that sort of thing though
