    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • At the beginning there were some nerves as not knowing what to expect but with the use of initial ice breakers and showing us how the day will be planned out made me feel very at ease and settled very quickly. Staff were very friendly and welcoming on the day.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They encouraged not just me but everyone to apply for one of their many different programmes available. The importance of trainees and new recruits was highlighted to us by the head of recruitment who spoke to us. It was explained how all new trainees are given a “buddy” to help guide them as they progress with time off given to allow focus on work.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • This insight clearly highlighted the day to day life as an accountant. We’re told how new trainees are treated as the enter right up to when their course or programme ends. All questions were answered and this was done by current trainees which I found very helpful as they shared their experience.

    5/5

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • I found it extremely helpful. One of the initial points made was the company’s core beliefs and values. This clearly highlighted what BDO were lookin for from each staff member at any stage. This being emphasised at each point in the day showed how important these values are to the business.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • None of the expenses were paid for or reimbursed for travel to this insight day. However for those who drove free parking was given in the company car park. Also bus vouchers were given for travel from the office back towards the nearby train station for those who travelled by train,

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • There was some interaction between other employees at the company. The chance to speak to who was in charge of recruitment was there throughout. The opportunity to also speak to several trainees was available, they spoke about their regular days and answered any questions. However the opportunity to speak to other employees was not given. The chance to speak to more senior staff would have made the day a better experience and chance to ask questions.

    3/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • We were given the chance to ask the person leading the insight day any questions which we had. She was there to clear up any confusions we had. There was also the opportunity to speak to three trainees in BDO who were helpful also answering questions and explaining how they handled stress and work load. However the chance to speak to other qualified professionals was not given and this would have been better if the opportunity was given.

    4/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • I was not given a lot of information about activities outside of work. The majority of the information was regarding inside the workplace and how the day to day life is inside. We were not told about any other activities that are currently in place or may come into place in the future.

    2/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • I would definitely recommend this insight to anyone who seeks a career in accounting or even to those who are unsure if a career in accounting is for them. The insight day gives a very good idea of what a day in the life of an accountant is and what to expect in the next step you wish to take.
