    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Santander. It gave me the exposure to a variety of skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a Credit Risk environment. I enjoyed working on the pricing project that I was given - especially overcoming certain difficulties and issues. It was great to shadow different analysts in different divisions and understand the sort of work that they do on a regular basis.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt like my opinion and my thoughts were heard and were recognised. I felt like I was part of the team rather than being someone new. I was invited to team meetings and social events which further made me feel like I was part of the team which was great.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Whenever I needed any help with the project or if I had any general questions regarding industry knowledge, my buddy and line manager were more than happy to take time and answer them in great detail. They would ensure that I was given detailed answers, ensuring that I was comfortable with answer.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The pricing project that I am working on has lasted the duration of the internship which has meant that I have been busy every day. Every morning when I got into the office I had something to do and I had a plan of how to achieve it. This made each week go by very fast as I was constantly busy.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was working on a project throughout the duration of the internship which gave me a great deal of responsibility as it was my job to collate the pricing and application data and manipulate it to show trends on price competitiveness and quality of business. I was trusted to complete the project with due care and diligence.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Throughout the internship I was given great exposure to SAS/SQL which is a type of coding that is used by many different financial institutions. Now that I feel comfortable using this, I feel that this is a transferable skill that I can use in this industry in the future. As well as this I also used Excel in great detail - Pivot tables and IF statements - which can be used during my degree.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone was very friendly and very relaxed even though the work that they were doing was very strenuous. Everyone had a smile on their face and tried to make the most of their day. Overall, the atmosphere was great for someone like me who was new to the industry and to the role.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I felt like everything was very well set up. Before I started my internship, my buddy messaged me and told me about what to expect on my first day. I felt like that was great as it made things more clear and eased the nervousness that I had about starting. Once the internship began, the order of everything was very well done.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • In terms of personal training and development, the company invested by taking me through SAS and helping me understand the basics of it. I felt like everything was very well set up. Before I started my internship, my buddy messaged me and told me about what to expect on my first day. • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I feel like this is an organisation that I would like to work for in the future. The type of work that I would be doing on a daily basis, in this job, is something that I would like to do in the future as I find it both enriching and interesting.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes I feel like there is. Throughout the internship lots of the interns would meet after work and talk and get to know each other a bit better - it was nice to speak to some of them outside of a working environment and see what kind of person they are really like.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Compared to London, where I spend most of my time, the cost of living and socialising was fairly low. It depends on what you do and what you eat - but on average food places were cheap and so do the bars and pub. This was great because it meant that we could attend and arrange more social events.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Every week the office would hold sporting events where some people would go and play sports - it was a nice way of socialising with people outside of the office, enjoying the thrills that sports brings. It also brought out people's competitive side which again is something you may not see on a regular basis in an office environment.
