    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I loved my internship at the firm BDO. I was at client sites for the duration of my time and it allowed me to develop key skills and get a real insight to the industry. I would recommend it to anyone especially with the firm BDO as they truly do care

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very much so, colleagues at every level made sure I was ok and took time to explain things to me clearly. I never felt rushed and even when I made mistakes I wasn't 'told off' they took the time to explain why it was wrong or suggest alternatives in the future.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Very much so, I had meetings frequently with my manager. Other team members offered lots of advice and support no matter how small the task. There was no such thing as a silly question. Managers who weren't assigned to me would send me work or help sheets - nothing was too much trouble

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Reasonably, there were periods where I had nothing to do however this never lasted long until the team found something new for me. This was purely down the point at which I joined the client and that they were waiting on new info from the client - not a reflection of the firm in the slightest

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A lot more than I expected but I still didn't feel I was out my depth, it was the perfect balance. I was able to try different approaches that worked for me but at the same time what I did was supervised so I could never make a horrifically big mistake.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I study accounting so it helped me greatly in that it gave me the opportunity to apply the knowledge learnt in university to real life situations. It also confirmed to the this is the right industry and company (BDO) was for me. Which was the main aim of my internship.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I was not in the office at all so cannot fairly comment on the atmosphere of the office in general however feedback I did hear was it was friendly and very well integrated. In terms of the client office I was at the atmosphere was good as my team was small

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was well organised and there was communication at almost every point. Even if there was a slight issue I was always put in contact with the relevant person or someone would help me with whatever I needed. Flights and accommodation was organised for me.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm invests heavily in you as the put you through a weeks training in Birmingham paying for flights and accommodation as well as social activities for you. You are also given a laptop and further learning to do during the internship. The 6 weeks itself was just a lot of personal development.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very good, the firm pays for your training and from speaking to people further along the process you see how after each year that went by how much they developed professionally and that the firm truly allows them to grow by giving them increased responsibility which is good to know.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The time we spent with the fellow interns was really good. The firm planned so many amazing activities after work such as go karting, laser tag, a boat cruise and many more which helped so much with bonding. There was also lots of ice breaker sessions in the first few days which was good.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living in my area is extremely good and you are definitely able to pay rent/commute/ bills and have a social life on the salary easily. Public transport is reasonable and frequent and you are able to expense some of it to the firm if it is to visit clients.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
