    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed every part of my placement year at IBM. The company provides many opportunities to grow and learn over the course of the year, being supportive within your role and offering involvement in various tasks outside of your role too. I have worked in the Southbank office, everyone was friendly and there is a big intern community.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I have worked as part of a European team, and felt very valued and included throughout the year. Working with many different people on lots of different projects has allowed me to feel valued by the team and by colleagues outside of my team too. My colleagues have provided excellent feedback as well as constructive criticism that I can take on board.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Support and guidance is always given constantly throughout the placement. I have always felt very supported, and very comfortable asking questions and speaking about any concerns that I had. I have scored an 8 purely because at the beginning of my role I had no handover from another intern and found the first few weeks hard to get used to and learn the new role on my own.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Very busy most days of the week. Sometimes when the team is busy or the people I work for have a lot of meetings etc I have to find extra projects and work to do. I have not found this much of a problem however - it gives opportunity to be involved in extra projects such as volunteering.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot more responsibility than I expected before I started the placement. Throughout the year, I have worked on various projects that require a lot of responsibility. These include a global newsletter, updating important monthly reports and supervising communications sent to thousands of business partners across EMEA.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I have learnt throughout the year are highly valuable to me. I feel that I can take these into anything I do in the future, whether that be my degree or another job. The routine and learning what it is like to work for a global business has been great.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Good atmosphere with lots of other interns to socialise with, and everyone is very friendly. The office has a great canteen and located in a fantastic part of London that is always busy with different things going on. At times can be quiet when other people and teams work from home, and there are no social events run by the company.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The overall placement was well set up, recruitment process was easy and I heard back very quickly. Once in the office I was shown around and given a desk. not scoring a 10 because I had no handover period - which I found made it initially difficult to learn everything.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • IBM support personal goals as well as goals within your role. For example - they offer online courses and learning for topics of your interest. They support you if you would like to have work experience or shadowing within or outside of the company. You have regular reviews every three months that ensure you are developing and learning skills.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Sports and Social Club

    National Travel

    International Travel

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would like to come back to work for IBM again because of how much I have enjoyed this year. However, currently they are not offering any roles on the Graduate Scheme that I would be interested in, so I cannot apply back at this time. I will definitely look out for potential employment in the future.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes - the intern community is huge at IBM. It is very sociable and the interns frequently meet up at lunch or after work. However, there are no organised events by the company, they have to be organised by the interns themselves. We had a christmas boat party and are hoping for a summer end of placement party too.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Expensive - it's London!

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Good nightlife with good bars (however not very many) and discount on Southbank with IBM card.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Loads of this - volunteering inside and outside of the company. Opportunity to travel.
