About You
It was a great insight into the investment banking industry. Also, you truly learn how life at citi is like. However, it was quite challenging to wrap your mind around the different valuation methods, in the real estate industry, in less than a week. To conclude, the spring week programme made me realize that I want to work at citi within the investment banking division.
It truly dependent on the person. My buddy was taking his time and truly teached me a lot. However, I felt that the more senior people were quite busy and therefore could not talk that much. Also, it seemed that some people treated me like a liability (especially interns and assosciate)
A lot in the different events organized by Citi. However, the work shadowing was quite unstructured there were some situations where I could not do anything at all. This was especially the case when we were working on highly confidential live deals. There I was not allowed to participate in the shadowing.
It was really helpful to learn more about the finance industry in general and to understand how every aspect of an investment bank works together. Furthermore, I believe that learning more about the real estate specific valuations is a great asset. However, while this experience is certainly a benefit for my professional life, I doubt that I can use real estate valuation at University.
The Company
While the different group events were certainly structured. I felt like the work shadowing was really random at times. Also, I felt like it was not fitting to have certain presentations during lunch, because it was really difficult to focus and participate in the different presentations while eating. Nevertheless, I still learned a lot!
Quite diverse, I truly loved the atmosphere within the Investment Banking division. However, the atmosphere within the other spring interns was hostile at times. Instead of being competitive it was quite cut-throat. However, once the official events were finished it quickly became relaxed again. To conclude, it was the perfect learning atmosphere.
My buddy invested several hours a day. After some days I was able to understand at least the basics of real estate valuation. Citi themselves provided me with a more general knowledge about the finance industry and especially how the financial markets work. To conclude, it was a meaningful experience where I learned a lot.
I do understand what especially the junior staff does (e.g. Analyst's). However, because of the limited work shadowing (only till 6/7pm each day I did not really experience the hours. Nevertheless the spring week especially combined with a summer internship really provides me with a good understanding what a investment banker does.
Everything Else
Yes, there were serpate events where I could speak to Management Directors. At the same time, I also had the opportunity of speaking to junior staff (e.g. interns). Citi also took care that I have the opportunity of speaking to employees of all divisions. All in all, it really was quite useful.
There is a gym it the same building and Citi employees reguraly go out and have drinks together.
It is the best way as a first year student to really experience Citi and what banking is like. Also if citi sees you as a good fit for the bank they will fast track you to the assessment center for a summer internship in the following year (even if you want to change the division).
