    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My internship with FDM group was an intensely valuable experience, i have grown in confidence more than i could have ever imagined before starting. Working at FDM, enabled me to network with the board of directors as was other prominent figures in the FDM community. If i could do it all again, i would!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Whether it be the colleagues that I worked closely with throughout the duration of my internship or employees from other departments on site, it seemed that everyone was aware of the work i was doing. There was always someone i could bounce ideas off and i felt that my work was going to have a real impact on the business as a whole.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There was a plethora of support available at FDM from colleagues and mentors alike. My manager deserves a special mention as he would regularly schedule 1 to 1s to see how i was settling into FDM life as well as check on progress with my project. If i had a question and he couldn't answer, there was always someone he could point me to.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Only very occasionally was there little for me to do! I constantly had something occupying my time and if i didn't, there was always something on site that i could help out with. Much of my work was independent based so i always had something to be getting on with. If i ever reached a point where i felt like i didn't know what to do next, there was always someone i could ask for advice.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given an incredible amount of responsibility within a few days of starting my internship. I was tasked with developing, managing and delivering an app development workshop to school girls from Loughborough for their award winning app idea. The workshop consisted of, addressing requirements, wireframing , prototyping and coding exercises all packed within two day window. It was a great to be solely responsible for something that was going to greatly benefit others

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My ability to work independently has vastly improved which will no doubt increase my level of productibity at university. Similarly, whilst interning at FDM i was given the opportunity to learn SQL through a professional training course. It was an incredible opportunity and i have already been using the skills i have learned within weeks of returning to university.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was lovely to work at FDM. There were so many people from so many different cultures that i could interact with on a day to day basis. The office was always busy and lively, but work was always being completed. The office itself overlooked the Thames! I was so lucky, on the rare occasion that it was sunny in London , it was a beautiful place to be.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Considering the fact that it was FDM's first time organizing an internship for the TargetJobs Undergraduate of the year competition, i would say that they did a pretty awesome job. I was put on an important project and given the opportunity to meet so many likeminded people. Very occasionally there were signs of disorganization but this was very few and far between

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As already mentioned, i got to train in a professionally taught SQL course, the skills learned from such a course i will probably never forget in my life time and will serve me greatly as i pursue my career in data science. In addition to this, mid way through my internship i traveled to the Leeds FDM site to learn more about app development technologies which was hugely beneficial to my project

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Travel loan

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would argue that the employment prospects within the organisation are very good. The organisation's primary purpose is to place its trainees in prestigious companies throughout the world, and they offer world class training in IT. If you want to secure a career in IT, this is the place to be.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were regular social events after work and in London there was plenty of opportunities and choices for places to go out and things to do. There were no shortage of in house events such as hackathons for people in the business to come together and brainstorm about something new.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Well i guess you would expect the day to day living costs of the UK's capital to be incredibly expensive. I personally commuted for almost two hours every morning to get to work. Honestly it wasn't ideal but these opportunities don't come along very often ans so i wouldn't let it put you off.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • It's LONDON, there is literally always something to in London!! whatever type of person you are, there will be something for you to get stuck into. There's also always opportunities to try something or go somewhere that you've never done or been before. That's always an exciting experience for sure!

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes! there was a community of interns that would go out and do various activities after work, whether that be a few relaxing drinks, escape rooms, museums etc. If someone had an interest in something and wanted to do it, there was no alienation, the idea was always considered and often it happened!
