    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It is a difficult scheme however definitely worth the while. Great opportunity to help children from low socio economic backgrounds. Furthermore, it is a rewarding job as the children are so enthastic and engaging.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The staff at Teach first are excellent at making you feel apart of the vision. The staff at Teach First have a clear vision as they outline that the link between low income and low academic attainment is greater in the UK than almost any other developed nation. Children eligible for free school meals are less likely to get good GCSEs and go on to higher education. This makes it more likely they will struggle throughout their lives, widening social inequality.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • LDOs and Staff at uni provided lots of support and guidance. I found that the staff at university were extremely helpful when it came to assessments and formal observations. In your first year, you have to achieve about 6 3000-5000 word essays (so doing your pgce ) at the same time as working fulltime. The staff at uni and the LDOs try their best to make sure that transition is smooth.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Extremely busy especially in your first year. Day would include lesson planning, behaviour management. data for the children in your class, observations every week in your first year and once/ twice a term in your second term, child protection concerns, marking, making sure the class is tidy, making displays, making sure each child is achieving their full potential and copious amounts of other things.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A lot of responsibility as you are responsible for a class of 30 after 6 weeks of training. You are responsible for: •Preparing lesson plans, teaching classes and evaluating student progress •Encouraging students and acting as teacher–advisors for students •Maintaining discipline in the classroom •Running extracurricular sports, clubs and activities (voluntary) •Communicating with parents about students’ progress Teachers Need Strong Organizational Skills Teachers must be organized. Without a good system of organization and daily procedures in place, the job of teaching becomes more difficult. A disorganized teacher could find him or herself in professional jeopardy. If a teacher does not keep accurate attendance, grade and behavioral records, it could result in administrative and legal problems.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Teach First recruit, train and support high calibre graduates who will make a real impact on educational disadvantage through their exceptional and inspirational teaching. The Teach First Leadership Development Programme lasts for two years, with training providers, such as University of Nottingham, delivering the Initial Teacher Training (leading to PGCE and QTS) for the first year.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The school that I was placed out was quite difficult however whenever possible Teach First intervened. I have found that the second year is a lot better as you aren't thrown in the deep end as much.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Teach First themselves were organised, we were provided with a school before the 6 week training. You need to be very organised. I thought I was, but this job has shown me the meaning of the word! It is crucial that you have good motivational skills, which is something you learn and get better at as you go through the programme. Creative thinking is important as you have to think through kids eyes and work out what the kids will enjoy in terms of your lesson plan. Finally you have to have a real passion for your subject and be a positive person as the job is stressful!

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There are lots of opportunities in Teach First after your 2 year programme. Teach First’s two-year Leadership Development Programme harnesses the enthusiasm and drive of outstanding graduates and experienced professionals. It provides you with the skills, experience and opportunities needed to become inspiring teachers and leaders in the classroom and beyond. There are huge benefits all round. Teach First and its partner schools gain the enthusiasm and expertise of exceptionally skilled graduates. You develop many of the skills you need to become a future leader, whether that be in education, or a business like PwC.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Above 25 days holiday

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing as there are lots of different opportunities, Teach First gives you a unique opportunity to transform the lives of young people. The link between low family income and low educational attainment is greater in the UK than in almost any other developed country. Teach First believes this can change. An independent charity and an increasingly powerful movement for social change, Teach First works to drive up educational standards and raise aspirations in schools in low income communities. They have lots of partnerships, such as Deloit and PwC.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The other teachers are great and a few of them came through the programme so they are very supportive. With regard to the other teachers who are part of Teach First, it’s a pretty sociable programme and there are monthly events run where you get to meet up with the other graduates on the scheme who form my experience have been a really nice bunch of people. In my school,, there were 4 other teach first members which is very nice.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Leicester - 2 bedroom is about 700 pounds, 20 minute to school, Have to travel to uni once a week.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Not sure

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The brilliance of Frontline is that, like Teach First, it aims to capitalise on the idealism of young people who may not have decided on a career and who want to make a practical difference to children who have had a difficult start in life. Thus it could focus limited resources on where they can do most to attract able people into children's social work. Therfore, there were loads of social activities such as crazy gold and so on.
