    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Roke is a very comfortable environment surrounded by nice grounds. The supervisors are approachable

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was placed on a group project and therefore felt like any other member of the team - attending daily meetings and demos, and felt comfortable making suggestions/contributing.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • 4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There was always work to do on our project and so I was kept busy every day. There were only a few days where I felt there was a time pressure e.g. with upcoming demos

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was able to contribute and encouraged to try to solve issues outside of my current skills.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt a lot about web development and gained experience in some practical frameworks which are used by many other companies.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office is relaxed but focused. I felt I could approach my supervisors if I had any questions. The surrounding area is very nice for walks at lunch, definitely a rare perk to the work environment.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • There were 9 interns overall and so there was a comfortable group atmosphere. We were inducted well on the first couple of days and so I felt I knew where everything was/where to go for help. The team I was working in was very inclusive and happy to help with queries. Other interns on the program had solo projects and seemed to get less assistance/supervision though.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I got the opportunity to learn web development using modern frameworks and so I felt I've profited a lot from the experience.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • They seem to have an established graduate program and are hiring quite large numbers each year, so I expect there are good prospects for employment post-graduation.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Roke has its own on-site bar and there are frequently people playing tennis/rounders. The social aspect surprised me as being very good. There were 9 interns and we all got to know each other well which was an added bonus.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Southampton is probably the best bet for accommodation. Uni halls can probably be found for £100-£160/week (Wessex Lane/Liberty Point are good bets).

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Romsey is very quiet but most people travelled from Southampton/surrounding areas so was good.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • A fair few opportunities to play sports or take part in lunchtime clubs.

    4/5
