    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I've found the whole experience truly enriching and interesting. I've met many wonderful and interesting people and I have learnt so much about the industry and about how I could potentially fit into it in the future.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt that particular colleagues were very consciously making sure that I was always busy and content in the given task. I also felt valued and accepted as an individual and always felt included in the social activity of the office. Increasingly, I felt that my co-workers understood at what level my experience was, meaning that they could give me appropriate tasks.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was lucky enough to be involved in numerous projects in both the MEP and sustainability teams, meaning I had a variety of supervisors. This offered a great insight into the different roles within the office, but also into the different ways of thinking of the employees. By observing which method of supervision suited me, I will hopefully be able to transfer these skills into any future managerial roles that I may take on.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It would completely depend on the day. Being between departments would mean at times that I was very busy, but it also meant that I was occasionally idle, whilst each team would decide what would be the next best use of my time.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was certainly treated as a normal employee and my work within the central files would genuinely contribute to the projects, but always with the security of an employee checking through my work. Considering much of the work was in my second language, I was glad to take a backseat in meetings and consolations, listening rather than contributing, I felt I was given an appropriate and comfortable level of responsibility.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I've learnt so much that will absolutely contribute to my studies. Many things that have previously been a mystery during my degree have now been explained and the basic introduction into the software Revit is going to be invaluable. I feel excited about how this internship will influence my performance in my final year of my degree.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Convivial and welcoming. There's a strong level of respect and friendship between employees, and a real effort was made to include me within this. Small things such as the weekly yoga sessions, and the spontaneous cakes and ice creams made for a very relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I occasionally felt that it would have been beneficial for the other employees to have a better understanding of the degree I was coming from. This was the only point of communication that perhaps could have been stronger and better organized. Otherwise, the expectations from the office were clearly stated.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Having received a scholarship through the Happold Foundation, I feel incredibly grateful and indebted to the company. On top of this, I was consistently offered advice and support in moving from the UK to Berlin, and was given extremely valuable training in software and sustainable development.
