    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I really enjoyed doing different trainee tasks as well as learning more about corporate law. It was also very enjoyable meeting everyone on the corporate team, who were all very friendly and welcoming. The work I was given was interesting and varied, but still quite challenging which again added to the experience.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • It helped to have a set list of tasks for the week. This reduced the problem of feeling out of place and not having anything to do. This also stopped the need of having to pester your host for more jobs to do which is what I have experienced at previous firms!

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • Having a host was very useful. Although I respected that she was very busy with her own work to do, it was a comfort knowing that she was there if I did require any help. She was very nice and approachable so I knew it would not be a problem!

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The presentation has developed my confidence and public speaking skills. The topic also improved my researching skills which will be useful for University. The tasks I was given also developed my analytical and attention to detail skills, reminding me of the importance of checking over important documents. I also learnt how to draft important client and Partner emails.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • Very well structured. Good set of tasks to keep you busy from the outset. The tasks leading up to the presentation were also in a good order as each task gets more challenging preparing you for the next one! A very wide range of activities despite it only being 5 days!

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • General atmosphere was warm, positive and very friendly. Everyone was very welcoming and people would always smile at me! Started up some good and interesting conversations in the lifts, kitchen and even in the toilets! Everyone seemed to be very approachable and easy to talk to - great atmosphere to work in!

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Was only there for 5 days so didn’t really get the chance. Perhaps if the placement was longer, the firm would have done more. Didn’t really receive any training or development – but I am not sure if there was really any need to. If the placement was longer then perhaps I would have.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • It was very useful to be given real life work to do by my host. For example, I drafted a number of letters and emails for her which she then ended up sending on to clients within the same day! I was also able to ask questions about the application process at the firm, the Trainee programme and the likelihood of staying on.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • The company culture is very much centered on friendliness and approachability, while also being a very hardworking and leading law firm. The Shoosmiths core values were emphasised throughout the week: •Pulling together. •Talking business sense. •Being within reach and responsive. •Taking initiative. This again illustrates the culture of the firm

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • You get paid on a monthly basis after your placement. You have to fill in a timesheet and hand it in on time or you might not be paid at all or on time. You do not get reimbursed for travel as they said it was a paid placement and so didn’t feel the need to.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Was only there for 5 days so didn’t really get the chance. Perhaps if the placement was longer, the firm would have done more. Didn’t really get to go along to any networking events as there were none on in my week - just depends on luck. If the placement was longer then perhaps I would have.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Definitely a useful insight into life at a leading law firm! The week enables you to gain an insight into your department and the kinds of tasks you will be required to complete as a Trainee. You are also able to see the Partners and Associates in action throughout their day which is very interesting.
