    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement because every day offered something different. Throughout the year I met a variety of different people and I was also able to learn about the investment banking industry which was something I was always interested in, but never had the opportunity to study.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was treated exactly the same as any of other employee which was reflected on the responsibilities I was given. In addition to this, my colleagues were happy to invest time into my development and answer any questions that I had.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The support and guidance I was given by manager gave me encouragement to seek opportunities to go above and beyond my day-to-day responsibilities. In order to improve my learning I was given weekly presentations to prepare for as well as regular 1-1s to monitor my progress.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The one thing I learned on my placement was that being busy was a very good thing and if I wasn't busy, there was plenty of opportunities to fill my spare time with work that needed doing. The hours were demanding, however I saw the benefit of working those hours which will be reflected positively on my CV and appraisal form.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As I mentioned previously, I was given lots of responsibility during my placement as I was treated as a full-time employee. During my placement I was able to meet high-profile clients, plan events as well as contribute to the growth of my desk which will result in the growth of the business.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • People skills - the ability to collaborate with a variety of different people Client Focus - understanding what my responsibilities are to keep my stakeholders happy Commercial Awareness - the importance of keeping updated with current affairs Influence - the ability to articulate my ideas and get other people to follow them through. Not only will the above skills help with my degree, but they will also help in the career I chose to pursue after university.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There was a genuine buzz on a day-to-day basis as everyone wanted to succeed on a personal level which then resulted in the business achieving its objectives. This also created a competitive atmosphere which I felt I thrived upon.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The work placement was organized well. There was a structured induction as well as clear dates being set in the diary for monthly reviews of my progress. Towards the end of my placement, the reviews on my performance became less prominent as my manager/stakeholders were happy with my personal output.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Weekly one-to-ones with my manager in regards to my performance and my objectives moving forward meant that my development and training was closely monitored. Having come to the end of my placement, I feel I have gained the skills necessary to succeed in my final year at university and beyond.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing as it is highlighted from the beginning of the placement that there is an opportunity to be invited back based on your performance during your year with the firm. There are also promotions available during your placement such as Talent Scout and a Hays Ambassador.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Due to the number of interns in the business there was a very strong intern community resulting in a good social scene throughout the firm. I have made friends that I will genuinely keep in touch with for years in the future.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I live close to London so living costs weren't a problem and I was able to save money for the summer and my final year of university. Being in London, socializing proved expensive, however I made some good memories which meant it was worthwhile!

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There were a variety of things to do depending on the mood I was in. There were a number of bars and clubs for nights out that lasted until the early hours of the following morning as well as facilities which accommodated for recreational activities such as 7-a-side football and crazy golf.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, throughout the year Hays put on a number of events and activities to get involved in. This enabled me to meet a number of different in the business which meant my social circle was limited to my team/department.
