    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Very enjoyable - a fun and competitive environment to work in. Somewhere I would recommend to gain more exposure. Gave me a good understanding of what it is like to work in a corporate environment. Every day had it's unique challenges which definitely enabled me to grow as a person and to become more dynamic.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very much so: at no point felt like I was an intern. I had a specialist area to look after which was unique. I was also given a new recruitment area to look after which meant my role had plenty of potential. In my time I looked after both permanent and temporary vacancies which gave an all-rounded experience of working as a recruitment consultant.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There was always someone who could help you with any queries. During my time I was mainly managed by two people - one of which was a junior manager and the other was more senior. This gave me a good insight into how best to manage people and seeing the effect that different styles can affect colleagues. Support was there when needed.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Busy - always had something to do. The way recruitment works means that you will always have something to be getting on with. If you find yourself sitting there being bored you are most likely doing something wrong. If you want to be a recruitment consultant there is no doubt that you will have to be prepared to put in the hours if you want to be successful.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A good level of responsibility. I think quite early in my internship I earnt the trust of my managers to not have my hand-held throughout my time here. I liaised with clients directly from about 1 month into my placement which gave me a big opportunity to develop as an individual. At the same time, help was always there if needed

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Not overly relevant to my degree but that was no fault of Hays. Good training provided witch different managers which gave me a good chance not only to learn best practice but also to learn about the progression available first hand from different consultants. Skills have definitely developed principally the ability to come across as a professional and credible recruiter.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • A very positive, energetic and fun environment to work in. I would undoubtedly recommend it to any outgoing people. At the same time there is a strong work ethic instilled in the vast majority of people that work here - this makes for a great balance between working for a successful company but also being able to have fun whilst doing so.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Good handover from the person who was in the role previously which meant by the time they left I was able to hit the ground running in the role. There was also an aftercare scheme in place with our internal recruitment team which meant that if there were any problems there would be someone who could help. Expectations were also made clear at the outset.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • One of my managers devoted a lot of his time to aiding my development which I think will have long lasting affects on my career no matter if I do return to Hays or not. He taught me many transferable skills that I will be able to take into whatever I chose to do. I even felt that I could go to him regarding something that wasn't even work related.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Financial Bonus

    Travel loan

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I have already been told that there is a job for me here If I wanted. This leaves me in a good position going into my last year of university as I can weigh up what I want to do and decide if coming back to Hays matches my ambitions. I have also been offered the chance to work for Hays on a part-time basis whilst in my last year at university.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Very good social scene - generally quite a few of my colleagues will go for drinks after work on Fridays and also through the week on occasion. The way the intern scheme is set up means that there is no real distinction between full-time employees and interns so it is very easily to social with people of all levels. I also play five aside football once a work with colleagues.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Very expensive - but that is to be expected in Central London! However Hays have made it a lot more affordable by running work incentives that mean you can finish early on a Friday and get reduced priced/free drinks. Lunch is not cheap in the area that I work in but there are plenty of nice places and you can always go Tesco for a meal deal if you wish.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife is good, however again it is quite expensive. There is a good choices of bars and pubs to go to and there are also some clubs around. Generally there will always be something going on each Friday as there are plenty of people who work in the office so they'll always be someone around.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, I played five aside football every week with colleagues and I know there is a similar setup for female staff and netball. As my manager also played in this team it gave me a good chance to develop a personal relationship that was more than simply work. I would say that this opportunity wasn't necessarily available to people of all standards.
