    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement scheme as it gave me many insights into an area on industry in which it is really difficult to get involved with. as I was able to get involved with with a placement scheme it means that I hope to have my foot in the door for the future to come. this means with the high chance to get started in a good company after I graduate it adds to the enjoyment that little bit extra.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Was really able to join the team and be treated as a full and proper member. this was evident more so than normally when on business trips and off site meetings as they always went above and beyond to accommodate me. They were also really helpfully when it came to showing how the company systems work and provided help when asked.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • when it comes to the help and support given by my management team, there is only one word, and that word is fantastic! the reason for this being that when ever I needed any help or anything they were also willing to provide and then some! Definitely always went out of their way to make sure that I knew what I needed before starting any tasks.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • as my role was based on a monthly programme my day to day business was very relative. but on everyday I was in placement for I always had at least something to do and was never just staring at a blank screen. if however I did find myself with not a lot to do I would go out of my way to find something or extra work or even work on some of the coursework which my university had set for the year in industry.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As I was working on a large, national important infrastructure project I had a lot of responsibility associated with my role. this is because my role was the the assistant project manager of a multi hundred pound contract! and as acting as part of a very experienced MDT, a lot was expected of me e.g. that time scales etc. would all be meet and that all work would be to a high standard.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • All of the new skills I picked up and developed on my year of placement will all be useful for my future studies and employment hopefully. as well as this most of them can be applied to other aspect of life too, which meaning they will be able to future develop my other areas of life, not just the academic or working side of life.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • the office had a real work had play hard atmosphere about the place. yes, everyone was always serious and fully devoted to making sure that all their deadlines where meet, but at the same time there was also good fun and banter going on, which helped those work days just float in the door.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • in a word; very. on day on everything was already and waiting before I had even stepped in the door. this meant that had received all of my IT and user names and email address etc all ready to go and get stuck into the job. as well as there there was a monthly catch up meetings with my manager or more I f I needed them as then there was a placement review with the company every 6 months.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • when it came to the terms of personal training and development, they invested a lot. my company was a learning organisation which meant that they commmineted lots of resources to the development on new starters and there was no exeptions for an industry placement student as I attended many different courses provided by the company as well as they even sponsored me to do my CSCS card.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes there was, and a good one it was. First of all there was the Tuesday night 5 aside football, where ten brave lads fought it out for 60 minutes through any weather conditions. and the second would be the Wednesday night drinks. nearly every Wednesday night there was a venture to the local or even sometimes future a field when we were feeling adventurous which was actually quite often!

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Central London, say no more. yes there was still some money left in the budget after the cost of life was taken into account but it wasn't much. That being said the the biggest factor to allthat cost stuff was the price off both transport e.g peak times on the tubes/ rail tickets and then the biggest big one was definitely the price of accomandtion.. which was nearly 3 times the amount it would cost when back to uni! madness!

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
