    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My placement at Cavendish had positives and negatives. When first starting at Cavendish it appeared that my department wasn't aware that I was arriving until a couple days before hand as I was given a PowerPoint presentation for the previous years intern. Throughout the internship I was given 'work' which seemed like it didn't add value to the company and overall it seemed like the office was slow. There wasn't a project I was responsible for and had to ask for work weekly. Saying this I did learn a lot from the experience, enjoyed the intern meet ups and the 'work' I done gave me an insight of the nuclear industry.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • At times it seemed like I was just there and could be unnoticed if I didn't show up for work. This could be due my work not being a high priority,

    3/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My mentor was great and always supportive. The team I worked with would always be there if I had any questions, HR was also very helpful.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It really depends on what work is available. Throughout the 3 months I was there, 2 weeks were busy the rest was finding something to do.

    2/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • My work added very little value to the company.

    2/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • In terms of assisting in degree studies I would say very little. In terms of beyond I would say very beneficial in securing a job in future.

    3/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Being new to an office environment I found the atmosphere to be positive. Everyone seemed very approachable, friendly and professional. There wasn't separate offices for most senior members of staff which made it more integrated. On Fridays the atmosphere was always at a high as most people finished at 13.00 and was a causal dress code.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It really depends on where you are based, for my internship it was not well organised. As mentioned before I found it very difficult to get work and any form of responsibility. When first starting I made it very clear that another intern and I would like to have a site visit, this was mentioned many times only to have it looked into 2 weeks before finishing, thus not allowing enough time for the correct security clearances to be approved. The intern meet ups were well organised as the day was fully planned in advance along with transport and accommodation.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There was a total of 3 intern meet ups which was used for this.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The graduate scheme in Cavendish is well developed depending on which position you are in with emphasis on chatership. This is appealing but if I were to apply for the graduate scheme I would ideally choose a different department than the one I was based in for my internship.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The other graduates / colleagues were fairly sociable and would go out during the weekends.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Living: £400 pm Socialising: Really depends on what you enjoy doing, but can have a fairly cheap night out.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I enjoyed the nightlife as I was new to the area. There are plenty of pubs / clubs in the city centre.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I was not aware of any.
