The Role
Really enjoyed the placement as they seemed to give you a lot of individual attention and really try to make you get the most out of the time, by varying the things you were doing to let you observe a range of different techniques that are relevant to the research they are carrying out. They also took the time to tell you about the different areas of research that were being carried out within the department.
The people were always friendly and willing to help.
The support and guidance given by my supervisor was very good.
The balance was pretty good.
Once my supervisor was happy that I understood the methods of the techniques we were using then I was given responsibility to work individually.
During my placement I learnt a great deal about the scientific basis of the research that was being carried out by my supervisor. I also developed report writing skills (specifically for writing research papers for scientific journals), and had the chance to gain experience in a number of techniques commonly used in genetic research studies such as PCR and DNA sequencing. I found that the skills I developed during my placement were very useful for my degree.
The Company
The atmosphere was really nice, the staff were all friendly and very welcoming
The placement seemed very well organised as they regularly have placement students.
The placement really seemed like they were happy to try to give you the best learning experience, they would explain and take you through techniques that you would not be using in your time there just so that you could get a better idea of different aspects of research.
Subsidised Canteen
I think that if you are keen and enthusiastic then they will try very hard to get you opportunities with them.
The Culture
All the placement students got on well
The placement was in the South East of England, the cost of living and socialing seemed to be fairly standard for that area.
I was staying in quite a rural area, however if you stayed in the city of Oxford i think that the nightlife would have been ok.
I dont think there were many opportunities for the placement students, I think it is left for you to organise your own activities.
