The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed all the different roles I was able to try and I found each one challenging and beneficial to my experience. The reason I rated this 7/10 however was because there was not much variation day to day for what I was doing, and sometimes the work felt quite monotonous.
Everyone was very friendly and treated me like an equal colleague, which was a very nice experience for me after having several jobs in the past where I was almost patronised due to my age. The people there could not have been nicer and I was made to feel like I had been a big help after I finished my internship.
I had two supervisors during my internship and both were so helpful, they helped me with anything and everything and did not mind at all. They were both very approachable and I felt very comfortable asking them for help.
Some days, when I was nearing the end of a task, I felt at a bit of a loose end, however generally and overall I had the perfect amount of work: I never felt too stressed or rushed and the amount of work meant that the day went relatively quickly,
After the first few days of introduction and a quick lesson on the programs used, I was given full access to their database and was trusted to perform my role alone and unsupervised. I felt very well trusted and it was nice to know that they had confidence in me. They gave me as much responsibility as they could within my role.
I really developed my organisational and timekeeping skills which will be an immense help in my studies and also in general life. I learnt a lot about how companies work and how medical research is undertaken which will definitely help me in my future career.
The Company
It was quite quiet and reserved but everyone was friendly - just hard at work.
It was well-organised with my paperwork and start and end date etc, however the project itself was quite vague but only due to the fact that they allowed me to devise a plan myself so I could work to my own timetable, which was great.
I did not need much training for the role, however I did need a bit of training on Access, which they carried out at the start and throughout my internship by one of the computer analysts, who was a really good teacher and I understood things straight away.
Flexi Time
Above 25 days holiday
Appealing in terms of completing a masters or PhD alongside full time working and lots of opportunities for research in a diverse range of medical studies.
The Culture
There were a lot of lunch time activities available to me which were really fun such as baking or arts and crafts, and there were social events but in the future months after my internship finished.
Worked in the city but it wasn't too expensive - travel would have been expensive without a car but other than that food rent etc is reasonably priced.
Very good, great variety of nightlife in southampton from clubs to pubs to fine dining to live music venues.
There were some after-work fitness classes but other than that there was not much on offer.
