    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my 8-week internship and would recommend to all regardless of degree background. The Lloyd's market is truly about building relationships and I feel like I came away with some valuable experiences and friendships.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I think I integrated into the team quickly and was given responsibility to work independently, I also felt my input was always welcomed.

    3/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My supervisor was very approachable and helpful. All team members were available to answer any queries or suggestions.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There were some quieter periods this is partly because during the summer a lot of market participants are on holiday so the workload for the department (Delegated Authorities) was lighter. During the first month, there was enough work to keep busy, but as my efficiency improved workload diminished and could normally have most work for the day done by mid afternoon. Some other interns had higher workloads in other departments

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • My job involved assessing whether coverholders and Managing agents/ Brokers had met certain regulatory requirements, I was quickly given full autonomy to approve requested changes. The team definitely trusted you to make your own judgement and know when to consult a colleague.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I developed my communication skills, liaising with various people was part of the day-to-day job. I improved my organisational skills as multiple tasks would be at different stages, and have different internal deadlines (managed through ATLAS) therefore the ability to prioritise work was paramount.

    3/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I was in a young team, it was a fun and friendly place to work. One thing about Lloyd's (and insurance in general) is everyone knows everyone, by talking to people you can get a much deeper insight into the market than you would from just your experience within your department. The low lighting, low ceilings are not to everyone's taste (on Level 5)!

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The HR talent manager had clearly put a lot of time and effort refining the internship, it ran smoothly with no real hiccups. I may be wrong but the department allocation seemed somewhat random, it would have been nice to have been given some sort of preference as different departments have very different types of work i.e I did very very little work on excel whereas others were mostly excel based.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There was an induction day and an excel training session which was helpful. People were very willing to help you learn and get the most out of the internship

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Healthcare/Dental

    Travel loan

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Yes, I hope I will be joining the graduate scheme next year, the Lloyd's market can be a little elusive from an outsider as it's set up is fairly complex, gaining an appreciation of how it works and the role Lloyd's plays definitely enhances employment prospects for the future whether that be with broker or managing agents. Lloyd's aims to prepare people for careers in the market and hence future prospects are very varied.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, the Grads were extremely welcoming and put on a few events. Amongst the interns we went for drinks after work at least twice a week. Being in the City there is so many bars and pubs on your doorstep ( One Under Lime is a bar part of Lloyd's building)

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It's London so yes renting ate away heavily at my pay packet. Add in other cost like a monthly zone 1-2 travelcard and costs can stack up. I was unfortunate as was paying Uni rent on top so was more squeezed than those who lived/studied in London

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As I have said above plenty of bars, went on two boat parties down the Thames and an insurers event in Shoreditch.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were networking opportunities and social events, Sporting/charity events were available to those interested

    4/5
