    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I got to learn a lot related to my degree and the office atmosphere is great! My objectives for this placement were to experience the environment of a real workplace and learn how needs are identified and resources are acquired. Also, I wanted to develop technical skills associated with my degree. I believe I managed to fulfil my objectives and learn a lot about the construction industry and the way a big corporation works.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My opinion was always taken into account and I was able to participate in every meeting. I am very proud to be a member of this team and this company. It is very inspiring to be able to work with people with so much experience and knowledge. One of the things that I liked the most about this company is the friendly atmosphere. This allowed me to feel comfortable enough to approach any member of my team to ask for advice. I have always felt involved in the projects and I was always given the chance to express my opinions.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I always received help when I asked for it. Even though I was involved in two projects and the work load could have been too much, my team helped me achieve the goals in an efficient and practical manner. Whenever I had a questions, I was always directed to the right person and they were happy to help. Also, it was very stimulating to be able to participate in meetings and discuss possible design solutions with my team members and senior engineers. Since the very first day everybody in my team made sure I was enjoying the work I was given; and that I was involved in the discussions and meetings.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was generally very busy, but by the end of the placement I have finished all the work load for both the projects I was involved in. However, I was just placed on another project for the last few days and there was plenty to do. I was also asked to help another group, so I was always busy. It was so satisfying to feel you are helping on projects even though you are just a student with very little experience.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I always had my line manager and senior engineers to make sure what I was doing was correct. However, I was practically doing 2 major projects on my own. It was also given the opportunity to research about some issues in the buildings in was involved in, so I became the expert in this topic and was giving advice to others

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Everything I did in this placement was related to my degree. I am doing Architecture and Environmental Engineering, where the skills we need are exactly what I learned here. I was also able to experience the environment of a real workplace and learn how needs are identified and resources are acquired. This will be a key skill to have in my future career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was great! We would go to the pub every Friday and people would bring cakes from holidays! It was a very relaxed atmosphere with really nice people.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I was really well organised. I knew exactly what I needed to do and when all the time.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was payed a very high salary for an internship and I was also given a scholarship for my last year, so I would say they invested a lot on my training and development. They are also giving me the opportunity to apply internally for a graduate job, which means that I have a higher chance of getting the job than anyone applying online.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I was already told several times they want me back when I finish university and I am applying for a graduate Job internally, so I would say they are very appealing.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We got to meet everyone at a few company payed meet and greets, but I would have liked to meet people from other branches.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Bath is an expensive city and I am also commuting from Bristol, so it was a bit expensive.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Bath is not really a going-out kind of place, but lots of people lived in Bristol (as well as myself), so we would go out there. Bristol is great for nightlife, as it has lots of students.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, they were. The company has many cycling projects, softball games, lunch time gym, CIBSE talks, etc.
