The Role
The placement as a whole was a pleasure, with the time absolutely flying by. The people within the company are on the whole very friendly and I found it very easy to become an integrated member of the team. The internship is supplemented by a group project amongst interns which really gives you the chance to learn about a topic in good detail and familiarise yourself with working in teams. Lots of social opportunities either organised or not. Very sociable industry and if you're a people person then this internship is a great amount of fun. Massive opportunities to network with interns given the opportunity to attend events that were also attended by many CEOs and CFOs.
At first, it was a matter of proving yourself to your line manager and colleagues that you were capable. However, once I'd spoken to a variety of people and helped a few members of the team, it became normal for colleagues to approach me with work. Line manager gave me work to do that would genuinely help the company and the team and involved me in meetings he felt would be beneficial wherever possible, even enabling me to meet with various people to obtain information required without his assistance.
The support system was extensive, with us given graduate buddies, team buddies, senior mentors and a number of measures to ensure that we were fine at all times. My line manager was massively supportive, always offering advice on work and career. Was very useful in putting me in contact with people from various business functions I was interested in and even with people on the underwriting side of the market.
Due to the group project, even at times where you had finished your work assigned and your manager appeared to be busy, it meant that you could avoid disturbing them and simply do project work.
Fair amount for an intern - given work that would genuinely be put out in market reports and tasked with conducting research into developing new insurance products.
The presentation training throughout has massively helped me understand how to formulate a good presentation and feel confident presenting. The communication side of the job has made me feel far more confident when meeting people.
The Company
Very energetic with people always running around and speaking - perhaps quite unique to my department but on the whole a very vibrant and buzzing atmosphere. The atmosphere in the Lloyd's market is also pretty electric. People were great on the whole.
Really well organised with many lunchtime presentations from senior members of the business and organised socials.
Lots of investment, a number of daily workshops to improve things such as communication and before the final presentation we had personal feedback and training from professional actors.

I would like to work for the company at a future point in time.
The Culture
Yes, weekly socials and daily lunches. Bonded well with the other interns on the GDP scheme.
Expensive but expected.
Always something going on if you want to make use of it.
Lots of sports teams but was unfortunately injured during my placement so couldn't take part.
