About You
The vacation scheme was very enjoyable; there was an excellent mix of opportunities to get involved in substantive legal work and get to know partners, trainees, associates and graduate recruitment at informal social events.
The opportunity to work on real assignments for clients, as opposed to artificial tasks, made me feel highly valued. I was always thanked for my input.
I received a high level of guidance from both my supervisor and trainee mentor. The open and collegiate atmosphere of the firm allowed me to feel comfortable in approaching anyone within my department for assistance.
The experience I have obtained from this vacation scheme has enabled me to gain a greater awareness of how the legal principles I have studied, during the GDL, apply in practice.
The Company
The vacation scheme was very well organised. I was provided with a timetable at the beginning of the week, outlining when seminars, events, training sessions and social events would take place.
The atmosphere was friendly, supportive and unpretentious. The people I worked with were down to earth and clearly enjoyed being a part of their team.
Being provided with tasks which a trainee would typically complete, provided me with an accurate insight into the working life of a trainee solicitor at the firm.
Everything Else
Social and networking events were scheduled for every evening of the vacation scheme. There was a mixture of dinners, drink receptions and more informal events, such as ice skating with current trainees.
The networking events were an excellent way to gain an insight into different people's perceptions of working at Shearman & Sterling. It was also a helpful way of getting to know the firm's lawyers on a personal level, and to identify what type of personalities are compatible with the firm's culture.
I would highly recommend applying for a Shearman & Sterling vacation scheme to a friend who is interested in pursuing a career in corporate law. The variety of work which vacation scheme students are provided with, and the level of exposure you are given to premium work, is particularly impressive.
