The Role
I have really loved the month I've spent at Shearman & Sterling. I have enjoyed both the work I was given to do and the company of everyone in the office, all of whom have been so friendly and welcoming to me.
I have felt really valued by my colleagues, who were always grateful for the work I did and often also gave me useful feedback on what was good/could be done differently next time.
I didn't see much of This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions as he was so busy, but we spoke at the beginning and I knew I could contact him if there was a problem or I needed anything. Very busy! Which was great. I always had a fair amount of urgent things to do each day, but also some longer term projects I coudld go back to once the more urgent jobs had been completed. So I was never at a loss for what to do.
I was given quite a lot of responsibility, being asked to draft various documents/emails for distribution to partners or clients (these were always checked before distribution which is understandable but I still felt the work I was doing was important)
I have definitely learnt a lot of skills here which will be very useful in my law degree and beyond (especially how to interpret and summarise large amounts of complex information and present it in a clear and easily comprehendable way, also a lot of business and legal terminology and general familiarity with business/legal issues. I also learnt an unexpected amount about scanning which is not the same as copying - sorry The special training sessions put on for us have been great, most of the time. The only one that I think could be improved was the Commercial Awareness training on Friday 8th July. The vac schemers were asked to talk to us and we thought this was an odd way round to have it, and even found it a bit patronising (I understand it from the vac schemers' perspective: being a law student myself I know it's something law students are reminded about endlessly and my university tutors wish that those of us going into law would remember that it's not just legal skills but also commercial awareness that is required to secure a trainign contract). I just think we felt that having opted for a business internship, we are - if not better - certainly no worse in this regard.
The Company
Really nice! I didn't know an office could be this friendly...!
It was very well organised, I was given a hard copy of my schedule right at the start and it was updated regularly on outlook throughout the month so it was very easy to follow.
A lot of training sessions were put on for us, which were generally great. Also every single member of the team also took the time to sit down with me and explain what they do and make sure I understood how everything fitted together.
Very interesting and varied work and such a nice atmosphere, so very appealing!
The Culture
Yes, my team went out for meals and drinks on various occasions which was a lot of fun. We also had a couple of socials arranged for the interns.
I live in London so I lived at home with my parents, but socialising is expensive of course anywhere in London.
Having Shoreditch on the doorstep is great!
There one social I could attend was a lot of fun. I also helped [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] with a Charity Casino Night which was a great evening.
