The Role
I have extremely enjoyed my placement and Vauxhall was definitely the best decision to gain a real first-hand experience in the automotive industry. I have been given a great amount of responsibility and diverse tasks which not only helped me to develop my skills but also to gain recognition within the business.
The best aspect of doing my placement at Vauxhall is the fact that I am not treated as an intern or a student. I am given a real job which if I was not doing, they would need to find someone else to do it. This aspect really reflects in the extent to which my colleagues and other people in the business treat me.
Apart from my line manager who is always there to help regardless of the nature of any problems or questions, I have been assigned a personal mentor as well whose role is to help me out even further should I have any problems whatsoever. They have provided an extreme amount of support and guidance throughout my placement so that I can get the most out of it.
I have never had a moment when I did not have anything to do or I was bored to any extent. This means that I am quite busy on a daily basis but it is not a burden since I know that the work I do actually matters for the business.
I have been given an absolutely unexpected amount of responsibility which is actually one of the best aspects of the job. Project managing, presenting to directors and creating reports which landed in front of the managing director of the company are just a few examples. This is definitely one thing for which Vauxhall is the best decision.
I believe the skills I have developed this year can only benefit me in the future not to mention the amount of in-depth knowledge I have gained of the automotive industry. This placement has especially helped me to create an efficient work ethic which will definitely help with my studies and beyond.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office has always been great. There has been a great balance between serious work and having fun which really made me not running out of the office at 5. Furthermore, be it with anyone at any level within the company, the atmosphere was always great in any setting.
The placement overall was very well organised which is probably down to the more than 30 years of experience Vauxhall has in doing this. Both at work and from a socializing perspective the HR department made sure that we are having the best experience possible be it through additional training, team building activities or just simple night outs.
Vauxhall literally gives every opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge. If you want to develop any of your skills then they organise training for you, if you want experience other positions then they team you up with a person whose doing that job and the best is that they provide you with opportunities outside of the office as well.

Future employment possibilities are depending 100% on your performance throughout the year. You should think about it as a year-long interview. Unfortunately there is no Graduate programme at Vauxhall so an offer is really based on whether there is a position available and whether you would be suitable for it. Then they will invite you to an interview should you be interested.
The Culture
Cost of leaving is fairly cheap, renting especially which is good given that you are only a 35-minute train away from London. Other than that it is quite average. Not too expensive and not too cheap, but given the proximity of London the socialising part might fall into the expensive category.
