Summer Safety Engineer Intern Review

The projects that I was given to work on were, for the most part, fairly dull and had no relevance to my degree course. There were parts that were enjoyable, as no experience will be all bad, but it definitely wasn't as good as I had been hoping.

The people I worked with, and around, were really helpful and friendly and with one project I was given I was really made to feel that I had made a difference and helped out a lot.

Support and guidance were given if you asked for it, but generally you were left to sort yourself out.

As a general rule the work I was given wasn't too interesting and so I often found myself bored. There was also the problem that a lot of time was spent in waiting for people to get back to you with information, with very little else to do.

The only responsibility I had was to meet deadlines given to me, there was no sense of responsibility for a project, but I understand this would have been difficult with a short placmemt.

I was given very little training whilst I was there, with no chance for development. Again, this is because I was there for a very short time. However, I felt that there was very little work I did that had any relevance to my degree course. The general experience will help me in the future as I apply to jobs as I gained confidence, but there was very little other development.

In the office everyone was really helpful and friendly and would happily talk to you and definitely made you feel welcome at the start. It was a really nice environment to work in.

The general organisation was fairly bad, although I have been told that it was a lot better in previous years. There was very little information given out before the placement started, and for me it felt that very little time had been taken working out what work it was that I would be doing.

There was very little training and no chance for development but this would be due to the timescale of the placement. I believe for longer placements it is much better.

Although I have not necessarily ruled them out as a possible future employer, as I understand that it is a large company and there would be departments that would interest me more, I have not left with a strong desire to return either.

The other interns were really friendly and there were a lot of meals and nights out etc to go along to. It also helped that a few interns were staying at the same accomodation so socialising was particularly easy!

The accomodation that I stayed in was a University Halls of Residence that gave student prices which was really good. The socialising wasn't too expensive because, as a Uni town, there were very good deals on in a lot of places that students could take advantage of!

Bristol night life...!

There were clubs etc that you could join, but for a short placement these did not seem worth the joining fee. There were a couple or organised office socials that we were invited along to.
