The Role
It was very enjoyable as I was placed with other fun and helpful colleagues who I immediately became friends with. Also the work I was doing had a positive social implication which made me more motivated.
My colleagues gave me space to do my work and also were there to hang out during lunch hours.
My supervisor provided me with the details of the project but I was given any extra guidance to do with the project.
I had to work from 9am to 5pm with a one hour break in between for lunch. There was enough work to finish throughout the day but I had the choice to set my own timetable and what I wanted to achieve at the end of each day.
I was given full responsibility of the project, how I set my work schedule to complete deadlines, and what products to buy.
My knowledge in optic technology, and basic Java programming provided me with a lot of help with completing this project.
The Company
The atmosphere was calm and relaxed. There was silence during core work hours and people were lively during lunch hours. Colleagues went out together to eat and also to external events.
The summer internship did not really have overall guidelines or an end result. There was no clear indication of what was to be achieved at the end of the placement. Almost similar to a research and development project.
There was no investment in training and development
Flexi Time
Working from home
The pay was not bad for the time required and the freedom to complete work according to wishes was an added bonus.
The Culture
Fellow placement students immediately got along well with each other and even assisted each other with issues they had. Students got together to watch movies after work and also socialised during lunch hours.
The cost was pretty decent and if budgeted accurately could save a lot of money.
It was summer so the Nightlife was pretty dull as all the students had gone off on summer vacations.
There was opportunity to go University events
