The Role
It was a relaxed environment. It always felt like my opinion was valued and taken into account, and that they wanted me to be doing the work that I would enjoy the most, and that would make me grow in the fields that most interest me.
My colleagues were friendly and welcoming from the beginning. There were many people my age, and people older than me were understanding and friendly.
My manager had a good balance between giving me independence to direct my project as I saw fit, and helping me when I required it. He was always willing to help direct me make decisions. Sometimes he was busy with project deadlines and I had to manage on my own, but I think this was a valuable experience too.
I always had work to do, but it was not a very stressful and deadline-filled experience. Towards the end there was not much to do.
I was left to choose implementation details, but any design details were already predetermined.
All knowledge gained has really helped me so far in my course, such as python programming skills and basic use of Unix/Linux
The Company
Relaxed and friendly, we even sometimes put the radio in the office. We would discuss and chat between groups, solving problems together and helping each other.
The setup was simple, you are assigned to a manager that will provide you with tasks and advice during the placement, and at the end there will be a conversation with HR in order to discuss your coming back, and whether you'll want to move to a different group/department. They'll set you up with different managers in order to discuss, if you're interested in moving around.
There weren't many courses, but any employee is willing to teach and help.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Working from home
Very appealing, it's a very welcoming environment that makes you feel at home.
The Culture
There were events organised for all placement students, but we only met every once in a while.
It's cheaper than London, but still not cheap.
Not much nightlife in Kings Langley... But you are five minutes from London by train.
Yes, many activities were organised every month, barbecues, musicals, etc.
