    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I loved working for Aish. It was a really exciting time in the company with their revenue streams increasing rapidly. I was given lots of opportunities to learn and take part in a variety of business areas I had not previously experienced and did not feel like a standard intern. I met a lot of great people who I am still in contact with.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Massively. As soon as you demonstrate your ability to gain people trust, team members are more than happy to give you work to complete. You are also invited to dozens of meetings to see what the rest of the workforce is up to, alongside daily business updates to give you an understanding of how operations are going. Great idea as everyone feels valued.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was a member of staff with large amounts of strategy experience, and therefore was hugely influential in my experience at Aish. I personally feel that the company is full of these type of people and thus is becoming more and more successful. If you are struggling for motivation, there are dozens of people around the business who would be more than happy to help.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Good balance. I was always given work to do by my manager and directors but never to much to overload me. I started at around 7.30 every day, and was finished by around 6. Although this may seem a lot, staff got every other Friday off, so it comes down to around the average amount of hours that you would work in any normal internship.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given enough responsibility to really enjoy my time at Aish whilst also being able to learn a lot about the company. I don't feel that I could have taken up much more, otherwise I may have been overloaded, but I was given enough to be busy and feel that I was an asset rather than a normal intern.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I did undertake much training, but I was taught how to use Microsoft correctly as well as being taught how to correctly use some reporting tools, this was really useful, as I was able to then apply this during future internships that I completed and other employers were very impressed with this. I feel that the communication skills that I developed were probably the most key.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Great atmosphere within the office and on the manufacturing floor. Quite a close knit group who had been working together for a long time and therefore were happy to talk and be social in the office. Because it is engineering, it is quite male dominated with a number of the team being males. However, you can tell that Aish is investing in diversity, with young graduates from all walks of life beginning to work for the firm.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • My internship was very well organised. I met with HR at the beginning and then my manager soon after to discuss what I wanted to gain from the experience. This was really useful for me, as I came into the industry not knowing that much about engineering or business improvement. This is a really well managed company with fantastic senior level staff who are more than happy to help.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Great deal of investment in terms of time and money. You have to accept that you aren't going to be going into any company as an intern and running the show, but if you earn the companies trust, they will reward you with a great deal of opportunity. I was trained on a number of reporting and buying tools, and feel that I could go back into the role if they had a position open.

    Healthcare from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I won't be going back to Aish, but the main reason for this is that they helped me pick the career path that I wanted to undertake. Being in Business Improvement helped me develop my analytical skills, and after a couple more internships at large companies, I was able to secure a Graduate Program at one of the Big 4 accounting firms. This is something that I am passionate about, and I thank Aish for allowing me to discover it.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I was there for the Summer part, but was invited back at Christmas to attend the party then as well. Really nice people who are interesting but also show an interest in what you are doing. This is the difference when working in and SME vs a multinational. There isn't the office politics, and therefore you can really get on with people outside of the office as well. I was on my own in terms of other interns, but I believe they are looking at recruiting more. They have a very good community for their apprentices.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived at home with my parents so it doesn't get any cheaper, but the Poole and Bournemouth area isn't expensive. You could easily afford to live their for the summer on your salary. I live in the area, and it is amazing. Nightlife is quality and the area is beautiful. Best beach in the UK, and there is enough going on in the town to alway keep you busy. Lots of bars and restaurants.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Bournemouth is maybe one of the best night outs outside of London. Really cheap prices in pretty good clubs. There are loads of bars and pubs in the local area and it isn't as expensive as the local seaside areas. There are loads of cinemas as well and you won't run out of things to do. The only issue may be that the demographic is quite old, but there are young people around.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were a few clubs available and I know some of the guys on the workshop floor played football. People are always up for going for a drink. A lot of the workforce had family's so you do have to understand that you won't always be able to go out with everyone. Its all about getting yourself into as much as possible to really feel immersed in the experience.
