The Role
I really loved being a part of the events industry, I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to learn from the experienced and highly committed team. However, I felt that the company lacked a constructive programme for students to follow and truly make the most of their experience there and that more could have been done to support the potential learning experience.
My colleagues were a joy to work with. Higher management levels lacked the ability to be constructively critical which, in turn had an impact on everyday office moral. Having said that the overall year was a highlight and I definitely would do it all over again. Even though some parts were unnecessarily negative, I had some amazing opportunities and learned how to deal with undesirable situations which, in all honesty are bound to arise in any company or job.
I felt that more could have been done to enhance the most of my time there such as sitting down with my supervisors to make a type of 'bucket list' of opportunities and leaning that i wanted to achieve before I left.
It really varied on how much work the company had. Some weeks it would be slow and other weeks it was full on.
I felt that I was given a large amount of responsibility on a number of occasions and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities that my supervisors and higher management let me have.
I have definitely improved in a number of professional aspects and having a taster as to what life will be like after university is invaluable.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was not overly pleasant. In all honesty it felt like a ticking time bomb, I found my self second guessing everything that I did. In some respects that environment has paid off as I now feel I have struck a balance of constructive criticism on everything that I do. Having seen the extent and the effect of too much criticism I feel that I have been able to strike the perfect balance for myself without setting unachievable targets.
There were plenty of tasks to work on during my internship but in reflection there were no long term goals or progress reports. I feel that in reflection I wish that I had the opportunity to sit down with advisors at the university and made some sort of list or timeline of progress that I could follow to make the most of my time, or to know how to make the most of my time.
The company invested in an online tutorial website called Lynda, I was allowed access to this for tutorials such as photoshop and public speaking. There were not any practical tutorials. Alongside this onsite at events, our CEO graciously took the time to explain health and safety laws as well as pointing out a number of tips and tricks of the industry that he had learned over the years, i was very grateful for this time which he invested in us.

The company have since employed two of their previous interns full time and so I am sure that should I wish to return the company would consider me. I would like to see what other job roles are relevant to my future, but i would of course consider returning should a position be available and the opportunity arose.
The Culture
No there was not. There were only 2 interns and unfortunately there were not many hours outside of work to socialise with one another due to having to work a second job week nights and weekends to pay for working in London.
Very expensive as it was an unpaid internship and the cost of working in London were rather high, for fear of missing out I ended up relying on my student overdraft. I then managed to pay this off as the company took me on as a paid events assistant for 3 months.
We did not get to enjoy many nights out or social events outside of work due to a high work load and long hours. We did have a selection of events that I enjoyed attending with my colleagues.
We had many event invites however due to high work load it was difficult to attend. I did have some amazing opportunities to meet others in the industry and I am now looking at broadening my potential graduate jobs and the role that I would like to take on.
