    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • This has been a great job for me. It has been fun, challenging, varied and extremely busy. In 13 months, I can only think of one or two occasions on which I was not inundated with tasks.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • During my placement I worked under two management teams. One set valued my work immensely and put a huge amount of trust in me. The other set were very inexperienced and showed some extremely questionable management support, however they are still learning themselves and to an extent this can be understood.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Management teams in branches are very knowledgeable in general and I found you can learn a great deal from them in terms of learning about ERAC itself. However I consider myself very fortunate to have been provided with the great support by my first management team. I feel the job would have been very dissatisfying as a brand new employee working under a brand new management team.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Very busy. Although my main branch was considered less busy, branch size is directly linked to staffing levels, so in reality all employees are similarly as busy as each other. Erac's customer service way of life dictates this - involving pick ups, deliveries, lifts home, phone calls, the list goes on.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At one point in my placement I had no branch or assistant branch manager. Therefore as the most experienced staff member in the office I ran the rental fleet on many occasions. This was a thankless task but I feel was definitely where I learnt the most and really felt like my work was directly influencing the revenue stream the branch created.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Theory - little or none as this is not a theory based job. Enterprise has its own theories on many things which were interesting in themselves. Life skills/business acumen - A vast amount. Practical business skills are fantastic in this role. I made a large amount of very useful contacts during my placements, from higher management even down to customers.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • In general extremely good. With the first team I worked with it was unbeatable, with competitions always running, lots of banter and a willingness to help each other. In the second half there was consistently a bitter tone in the office, but a great relationship between the other Trainees and Drivers at least.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well. There is a comprehensive training setup in place with lots of opportunities to learn. The regional office in my particular area is a very tight ship and this shows during the training days. Nothing was too much trouble.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company and higher level managers a huge extent. Department heads are always on the end of the phone and are more than happy to take you for lunch to discuss their area. Branch managers a lesser extent, although they are busy people and perhaps do not have the responsibility to directly invest time or money in staff.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    Healthcare from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Enterprise want you to rejoin them - that is the idea. This has been made extremely clear to me the whole way through. The job is open to me when I return from University and I may well take them up on the offer.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • 3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Birmingham can be either. It is as cheap or expensive as you want it to be.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Birmingham is a brilliant place for a night out. Highly recommended.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Corporate parties and events, free meals out after good months profit wise, drinks after work etc. Really good to do this.

    4/5
