Graduate Submarines Weights Engineering

Location: Barrow (Cumbria)

BAE do offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements, however it is expected, on our Graduate Programme, you will be required to attend your site 3-4 days per week. Please note, this may be subject to change in line with the needs of the business. The hybrid working arrangements including which days you are required to work on site/remotely will be outlined by your line manager

Salary: £34,000 + £2000 welcome bonus 

What you will be doing

Undertake Weight Engineering tasks in support of the Company’s programme for submarines and surface ships. Involves calculation and monitoring of weights and centres from project concept to vessel delivery. You will be responsible to Senior Staff for the monitoring and reporting of a portion of the vessel.

Specific activities could include:

  • Preparing data for technical and production departments to assist them in the handling and transportation of units, sub units, modules and rafts.
  • Use of computer systems such as FORAN.
  • Assist in surveying and preparing the whole boat for ship-lift, launch and undocking.
  • Undertake functional design and/or provide specialist advice and qualification of their scope of responsibility and provide evidence for acceptance and fitness for purpose.
  • To obtain confirmation beyond reasonable doubt by review, surveillance and audit those assumptions, underpinning engineering data, analysis methodologies, and interpretation of results are valid.
  • To produce evidence in support of qualification, legislative requirements and safety justifications and provide specialist support for associated activities.
  • To contribute to identification and rapid closure of issues emerging from all product lifecycle stages and to manage the resulting change embodiment activities.
  • To liaise with both internal and external customers as required ensuring that their requirements are adequately supported and that their needs are fully considered and incorporated where appropriate and agreed.
  • To undertake peer reviews or checking/verification tasks as directed.
  • To provide realistic programme status, identify problem areas and implement agreed recovery plans.

Skills

As a minimum requirement you’ll need to have obtained, or be predicted to obtain, a 2.2 in your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Other engineering degrees will be considered.

Qualification requirements: Mechanical Engineering. Other engineering degrees will be considered.
