Materials Science Industrial Placement

Degree requirements:

Must be studying an appropriate undergraduate degree such as chemistry, chemical engineering, analytical chemistry, pharmaceutical science, pharmacy or materials science. You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You will be expected to provide evidence from your university to show you will be an undergraduate student for the duration of the placement year.

Your role as a materials scientist will give you valuable hands-on experience working on a wide range of techniques and measurement systems to analyse the physical properties of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), excipients and drug products and / or finished products. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team of analytical scientists, material scientists and dosage form and particle sciences experts.

Key roles and responsibilities will include:

  • Gaining competency on a wide variety of analytical testing equipment and techniques
  • Participating in project work to assist the global GSK network from development through to manufacturing
  • Root cause analysis investigations
  • Comparing suppliers as a cost saving initiative or assisting in optimising a process
  • Carrying out experimental work for numerous projects related to different dosage forms across specialty and established products
  • Opportunities to support and lead projects and discuss results with customers from other GSK sites around the world
  • Equipment documentation and compliance actives such as carrying out weekly and monthly balance performance checks
  • Support to key safety metrics and projects

You will be applying the skills you already have learnt at university and developing new skills such as; team working, effective communication and time management. You will work with and learn from an experienced team of multi-disciplined scientists. They will coach and mentor you during your year to help you achieve your potential.
