Analytical and Synthetic Chemistry Industrial Placement

Multiple roles available. Please read below about the positions we are recruiting for, when you apply you will be able to select 2 preferences. We will accommodate your preference where possible.

Degree requirements:

You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree; but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You may be expected to provide evidence from your university to show you will be an undergraduate student for the duration of the placement year and they are supportive of your placement. Must be undertaking a Chemistry degree.

Role 1: Analytical Chemist

We have industrial placement opportunities for highly motivated students with a keen interest in analytical chemistry.

  • You will work in a Good Manufacturing Practice regulated environment and gain experience of key analytical techniques and processes aligned to the characterisation of drug substances or pharmaceutical dosage forms
  • You will be supervised by an experienced analyst who will guide you in your day-to-day activities.
  • You will learn to utilise key practical skills and techniques that may include HPLC, GC, dissolution, MS, NMR, automated methods and platforms, method validation, stability testing, batch analysis testing and documentation.
  • The data you generate may be used to make key project decisions and could be reported in submissions to external regulatory authorities.
  • You will have the opportunity to learn some the key aspects of analytical activities that are involved in the development of medicines.
  • To fulfil this role, we are looking for someone who has a strong interest in analytical chemistry, is a good team worker with effective communication skills and has keen attention to detail.

Role 2: Synthetic Chemist

You will join an existing chemistry team dedicated to improving the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer. Placements are based in chemistry groups spanning all stages of the drug discovery and development process. You will work closely with your GSK supervisor in the planning and implementation of all aspects of your role. The placement is highly practically based.

You will carry out a wide range of synthetic organic chemistry reactions aimed at delivering molecules of interest. You will also be introduced to state-of-the-art techniques for isolating and characterising compounds. What is more, the GSK Chemistry Industrial Placement programme is independently accredited by The National Council for Work Experience.
