Our Industrial Placement scheme offers undergraduates the opportunity to gain valuable experience working with IT Professionals alongside 500 world leading Weather Scientists, developing our Scientific technical capabilities enabling our science to advance.

Why should I choose the Met Office?:

As an Industrial Placement at the Met Office, you will be paid £17,900 pa and have the opportunity to spend 12 months (between July 2021 - July 2022) within our Weather Science directorate, working on for example, post-processing and verification numerical models and forecast products.
Working alongside 500 world leading Weather Scientists, you will gain valuable experience and absorb information from IT professionals all of which will help develop your skills and help you put what you have learnt at University into practice.

During your placement you will have a clear learning plan and you will be supporting each other with projects, set up lunch groups and socials.

With your industrial experience there is the potential, after obtaining your degree, to apply and join one of the many scientific software engineering teams.

Tell me a little more about what you do….:

Through world-leading science and cutting-edge technology, we work together to question the ordinary every day because we believe in the best. Working with global partners, our IT projects reach as far as Space. Around the clock, around the world, people need to know more about how the weather and climate will affect them now and in the future. Scientists within the Met Office working with software engineers carry out a broad range of research which underpins all our products and services. From weather and ocean forecasting to climate prediction, our research and development teams are at the forefront of scientific research. Software engineering is key in our science. Our science enables industries to operate, aircraft to take off and land safely, and helps Governments to make key choices.

Can I apply?:

To become a Scientific Software Engineering Industrial Placement at the Met Office you will need to be someone who:

• Is studying for an undergraduate degree with a significant numeracy, science (mathematics or a physical science) and/or IT element which MUST incorporate a placement year (i.e. sandwich course).
• Possesses knowledge of at least one programming language (preferably Python)
• Has a keen interest in IT and software engineering at scale to support science and keeps up to date with current and future IT developments
• Has effective analytical and problem-solving skills
• Can plan and organise work using own initiative
• Demonstrates evidence of good oral and written communication skills
• A proven ability to work well as a member of a team

Desirably, you would be someone who can also demonstrate:

1. An understanding of modern software engineering processes and methods
2. Evidence of putting your programming skills into practice
3. An interest in data science and machine learning approaches

When will I hear if I have been shortlisted?:

We will be accepting applications until 28th February 2021. During this time, we may get in touch if you are unfortunately not eligible or we have spotted something missing from your application. Otherwise, you can expect to hear from us before the 19th March once the hiring manager has reviewed all the applications received. We often receive a high number of applications so it can take a little while to look at each one but we always let people know the outcome.  The next stage is an interview (likely to be via Skype at the end of March/early April) and that’s it!  Good luck!

Additional Information:

This placement is normally based in Exeter as you may be required for onsite meetings however there is likely to be a flexible remote working aspect involved.
