Material Science Industrial Placement

Our Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Manufacturing site in Ware is a global supply site as well as a New Product Introduction facility for oral solid dose (HIV and oncology products) and respiratory devices. We currently supply products to over 140 countries, as well as to patients participating in clinical trials.

Materials Science team carries out experimental work on a wide range of techniques and measurement systems to analyse the physical properties of APIs, excipients and drug products and/or finished products.

The Materials Science labs have many different techniques such as equipment which assesses the moisture sorption of a material, the viscosity of a cream, the particle size of powders and several image analysis techniques, to name a few. Due to the wide range of equipment, there is amble opportunity to be trained with competency on different types of techniques which will allow for a broader understanding of the physical properties that are investigated.

This team carries out project work to assist the global GSK network. Such project work may include investigating a route cause to an issue, comparing suppliers as a cost saving initiative or assisting in optimising a process.

The role will include

Carrying out experimental work for numerous projects related to respiratory, tablets, liquids creams and ointments and administrative tasks such as equipment documentation and carrying out weekly and monthly balance performance checks. Opportunity to discuss results with customers from other GSK sites around the world.

  • Broader understanding of the physical properties you will be investigating
  • Develop an interest in scientific techniques that you would not be exposed to at university
