Why should I choose the Met Office?:

As an Industrial Placement within the Observations Radar Hardware Engineer team at the Met Office, you will be paid £17,000 pa and have the opportunity to spend 12 months (between July 2019 - July 2020) working with a team of engineers on our weather radars, developing your skills and putting what you have learnt into practice.

Tell me a little more about what you do….:

In 2018 the Met Office completed a major £10m project to upgrade our network of 15 weather radars. We are unique in designing, installing and operating our own weather radars. A small team of engineers now have the responsibility to develop the system - improving reliability, reducing running costs, and improving data quality. The team also transition major improvements from R&D into operational use and provide expert advice to the field engineering team. In 2020 the team expect to be implementing a major modification to the radar transmitter and building a prototype next generation radar receiver.

This placement will be working with Met Office weather radar engineers to develop engineering improvements or transition modifications from R&D into operation.

Can I apply?:

To become a Radar Hardware Engineer Industrial Placement at the Met Office you will need to be someone who: 

• Is studying for an undergraduate engineering degree which MUST incorporate a placement year (i.e. sandwich course).
• Has evidence of hands on engineering skills and ability to use common engineering hand tools.
• Possesses good written and verbal communication skills.
• Can demonstrate evidence of problem solving.
• Has a proven ability to work as part of a team.
• Can plan and organise work independently.

As well as someone who can desirably demonstrate: 

1. A basic knowledge of radar
2. An interest in meteorology

When will I hear if I have been shortlisted?:

We will be accepting applications until Friday 3rd April. During this time, we may get in touch if you are unfortunately not eligible or we have spotted something missing from your application. Otherwise, you can expect to hear from us before the 10th April once the hiring manager has reviewed all the applications received. We often receive a high number of applications so it can take a little while to look at each one but we always let people know the outcome.

For operational reasons this post will be based in Exeter.
