Why should I choose the Met Office?

As an Industrial Placement within the Observations Marine Systems Engineering team at the Met Office, you will be paid £17,000 pa and have the opportunity to spend 12 months (between July 2020 - July 2021) working with a team on marine weather stations and their platforms, developing your skills and putting what you have learnt into practice.

Tell me a little more about what you do…

Meteorological observations underpin Met Office operations, being essential to forecasting and climate services. They are used to initialise numerical models, verify our forecasts, provide consultancy services and monitor climate change.

The Marine Systems Engineering team is responsible for deploying, operating and maintaining off-shore observational sites on a fleet of voluntary ships, buoys in the Atlantic Ocean, light vessels in the English Channel and other platforms of opportunity. As marine observations come from data sparse regions, they are very valuable to the global meteorological community.

This role will focus on developing improvements to the marine systems and platforms through the design of electrical devices and firmware improvements, helping to maintain marine platforms both on and off-shore, and working with data quality teams to improve the quality of service.

Can I apply?

To become a Marine Systems Engineering Industrial Placement at the Met Office you will need to be someone who:

• Is studying for an undergraduate degree with significant electronic and light mechanical design which MUST incorporate a placement year (i.e. sandwich course).
• Possesses knowledge of a programming language
• Has electronic and light mechanical design skills and some programming experience with a keen interest in engineering in general and keeps up to date with the latest developments
• Can plan and organise work using their own initiative
• Demonstrates evidence of good oral and written communication skills
• Ability and willingness to work at sea and at heights of up to 10m (training will be provided)

Desirably, you would be someone who can also demonstrate:

• A proven ability to work well as a member of a team

When will I hear if I have been shortlisted?

For operational reasons this post will be based Southampton.

This full-time recruitment post is not offering UK Visa and Sponsorship and therefore requires all applicants to be eligible to work within the UK / EU without restriction. If you are a non–EU candidate, you will be required to provide and attach all relevant eligibility documentation to your application at the time of applying.
