Design and Content Placement

Our Industrial Placement scheme offers undergraduates the opportunity to gain valuable experience working alongside some of the UK’s most talented and enthusiastic professionals.

Why should I choose the Met Office?

As an Industrial Placement at the Met Office, you will be paid £17,000 pa and have the opportunity to spend 12 months (between July 2020 - July 2021) working as part of our busy in-house Design Studio. You will be working within the Content Team in the creation of graphics and animations for our public channels (Facebook, IG, Snapchat, Twitter etc.) as well as supporting the wider Marketing and Communications Team on a range of outputs including weather graphics.

Working on projects with others, as well as individually at times, you’ll be involved in idea generation, storyboarding and art working – taking projects from concept to completion.

The ideal candidate will be an all-round content producer who is as social media obsessed as we are with a strong understanding of channels, formats and trends, with an eye on the future of social communication. From designing short animations for Twitter through to filming, editing and subtitling social-ready videos for Facebook, this role is hands-on and fast paced and within a team that values ideas. You'll be helping to digest and communicate often very complex weather and climate information in an engaging way and to a broad audience.

Tell me a little more about what you do…

Through world-leading science and cutting-edge technology, we work together to question the ordinary every day because we believe in the best. Working with global partners, we’ve an incredibly varied workload. Right across the world, every single day, people make decisions based on the weather. The Met Office provides weather and climate forecasts to help with those decisions so people can stay safe and thrive. This placement role is to help the office communicate that in an understandable and engaging way.

We will work closely with you to help develop your communication and time management skills as well as hone your design and animation expertise to help enhance your portfolio. This is a real chance to get up-to-speed with the skills required for a fast-paced design environment, putting your learning into practice to create graphics for a world-leading brand.

Previous interns and placements have gone on to gain work experience and roles at some of the top design agencies in the UK and abroad.

You will also be joining other placements on this scheme, who will be working in other departments across the office, and past cohorts have supported each other with projects, set up lunch groups and socials.

Can I apply?

To become a Design and Content Industrial Placement at the Met Office you will need to be someone who:

  • Is studying for a relevant undergraduate degree which incorporates a placement year (i.e. sandwich course)
  • Has experience using Adobe Creative Suite or similar, with an interest in animation.
  • Possesses excellent communication skills.
  • Has an understanding of branding.

Desirably, you would be someone who can also demonstrate:

  • Experience of designing for and using social media
  • An appreciation of customer needs including accessibility issues
  • A proven ability to work well as a member of a team

When will I hear if I have been shortlisted?

We will be accepting applications until Sunday 8th March. During this time, we may get in touch if you are unfortunately not eligible or we have spotted something missing from your application. Otherwise, you can expect to hear from us before the 31st March once the hiring manager has reviewed all the applications received. We often receive a high number of applications so it can take a little while to look at each one but we always let people know the outcome.

The next stage is a face to face interview at our headquarters in Exeter and that’s it! Good luck!
