Mechanical Engineering Placement

This exciting opportunity based in the Engineered Products Department at ASM Assembly Systems Weymouth, is available on a 13 month work placement for undergraduate students seeking sandwich placements as part of their studies or final years/graduates. The anticipated start date for this placement would be July 2017.

The main purpose of this role is to provide the student with industrial experience in production and management. Operating to daily customer demand, the role co-ordinates all functions associated with people and materials to achieve on time delivery (OTD) and quality at minimum inventory levels, within a defined, controlled system.

Main Duties

  • Attend regular weekly communications with staff and interfacing departments to encourage continual improvement activities. Minute meetings as necessary and ensure action points are followed up and communicated.
  • Work across the three Engineered Products disciplines, learning the Screens, Stencils and Tooling processes.
  • Gain an understanding of maintaining the Cleanroom facility, ensuring that working practices and procedures are adhered to, and the environment respected from a safety and working viewpoint.
  • In conjunction with the Team leaders and Process Engineer, develop and implement process improvement changes as necessary within production.
  • Work with team leaders to review KPI’s and implement local continuous improvement activities – devising, implementation and reviewing Lean Manufacturing processes across the EP manufacturing related facilities.
  • Work with Process Engineer on machine maintenance and regular TPM tasks.
  • Liaise with vendors and customers regarding schedules/contracts in conjunction with Buyers.
  • Apply JIT principle and support world class manufacturing techniques.
  • Ensure effective processes are used to achieve production takt rates, line balance, quality and customer OTD.
  • Understand materials ‘level setting’, set stock levels in agreement with line management (both production and supply chain).
  • To support customer orders as required in line with the flexible hours scheme.

Person Specification

  • Qualified or currently studying for a degree in an Engineering field, with a view to progressing to a Management/Quality based role.
  • Able to communicate effectively face to face and in writing with people at all levels in an organisation.
  • Able to build stable and useful working relationships; able to co-ordinate effectively with others.
  • Able to develop skills in basic theories, practices or procedures in one or more ‘skill-areas’ through formal training.
  • Able to apply a logical and systematic approach when solving relatively complex problems.
  • Approachable and responsive to new ideas.
  • Able to organise own time and workload to deliver against tasks set by others, with a medium to short term horizon.
