At Forterra, we like to keep Britain in the business of building. As one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of quality building products, it’s likely that you’re never too far from a structure made from our industry leading products.
We create bricks, blocks, precast concrete, paving and all sorts of other vital building products from an extensive network of 18 manufacturing sites around the country. Our diverse range of products and brands includes the iconic London Brick and Bison Precast – names that are instantly recognised and respected throughout the construction sector.
With product development at the core of what we do, we are continually working to ensure we have all our customers’ requirements covered, from initial groundwork through to the finished build. Few other British manufacturers offer the same variety of trusted building materials.
We employ over 1,900 people across our state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and our Northampton-based head office. Our employees not only serve the needs of a diverse client base – catering for residential new build, residential RMI and commercial construction – they’re talented and creative people who are continually advancing the boundaries of our business and the wider industry.
We’re also committed to encouraging more women to enter careers in the construction industry. This year, we launched Bricklaying Forterra Females (BFF) – the UK’s first all-female bricklaying contest, which we hope will raise the number of hands-on women construction workers from its current figure of just 2%.
The sustainability of our business is extremely important to us; from health and safety to our use of energy, the quality and responsible sourcing of our materials, and managing our impact on the environment. We take an integrated approach towards all our business processes with a single sustainability policy that is shared across the organisation and reviewed regularly to maintain the highest standards.
The business was founded in the 1960s as part of Hanson’s building products division and forged a significant UK presence through the acquisition of several leading building product companies. In 2015, the company was rebranded Forterra and listed as an independent company on the London Stock Exchange a year later.
Sustaining our shareholder value remains a crucial part of our strategic objective. This is supported through our focus on three key strategic priorities:
We are seeking to further enhance our business, and our ability to support the British building industry, through significant investment. In 2019, we will begin a £95m project that will double the production capacity of our Desford plant, which promises to make the facility the largest and most efficient brick factory in Europe – producing enough bricks to build 24,000 average-sized houses a year.
The scale of our business and the responsibilities that we shoulder create a powerful sense of shared purpose and a deep emotional connection to our work. Day in, day out, we challenge our thinking to develop best practices and advanced technologies that invite the extraordinary to happen, today, tomorrow and into the future.
