Given the need to move the vacation scheme online due to COVID, the Latham summer scheme was held on InsideSherpa. We got a very good insight into the various practice areas of the firm. Each practice area talks were digestible and followed with a Q&A where you can ask questions. Whilst it is not possible to get real client work due to us working remotely, we got a very good taste of the life as a trainee with the tasks we were assigned with.
I enjoyed the insight greatly. I was able to undertake 2 research tasks in 2 different areas I was keen on. Further, I had a trainee buddy and a supervisor. This allowed me to understand the nature of the firm's work and to see if I get along with the people at the firm. We also had practice area talks which helped me understand what made the firm unique. These are learning points I could not get just off a website.
I really enjoyed the scheme as there was a wide variety of events scheduled throughout the week. Not only were there opportunities to speak with trainees, associates, and partners, but we also got to experience some of the wellbeing events that the firm hosts, e.g., yoga sessions. The people at the firm were also really nice and friendly, and I really appreciate them squeezing in time in their busy schedules to give us advice on our work, and the application process in general.
Immensely enjoyed the scheme. It was well organised and presenters were enthusiastic and welcomes questions from attendees. The variety of presentations meant we learned a lot about the firm and the culture. The support provided by supervisors and trainee buddies was also beneficial to the experience.
It was a fantastic opportunity to get to know the firm and its culture; there's only so far you can get by reading online. For example, the practice area talks with partners, associates and trainees, were a great opportunity to learn about work in the city and how the work differs at each level and in each department. 9 stars!
The insight into the life of a lawyer that I got from the vacation scheme was very high. Each team I sat with during the scheme made a real effort to include me in the work they were doing at the time. In addition, the talks given by lawyers from each practice areas were also very helpful.
The placement has enhanced my skills and knowledge on different key software packages which I use at university. I feel more confident using the software as colleagues offered me feedback on the work I had done allowing me to understand the task at hand a lot clearer. I really enjoy the event! I do gained a lot of information above online searching at home. And the mock assessment process is pretty much useful, that gave me a clear view of what is the real process look like, and I will more clear that how to prepare.
