Why did you apply to Gist?

When I started the process of applying for industrial placements, all I knew was that I wanted a role in operations. I saw Gist advertised on the internet, and once I had read the job description and researched who Gist were I knew it was the job for me. Their people-focused culture embedded at the heart of the company illustrated how I’d be a valued asset to the team, with a clear plan for career progression once I finish the placement/graduate scheme. These aspects, along with others such as the vast opportunities for growth and development, and the buddy/mentor support structure were what encouraged me to apply.

What was the recruitment process like?

The recruitment process was streamlined and professional, first a telephone interview, then a depot day and finally attending an assessment centre at head office. At each stage you are provided with the relevant information you need to fully prepare, allowing you to do the best you can. We were made to feel very comfortable, and the recruitment days were enjoyable and engaging.

What do you do on a daily basis?

I am currently working as an Industrial Placement team manager at Gist Maylands. My role is to manage the day to day operation in the warehouse, managing jobs such as picking and intake. Performance management of operatives is also one of my key responsibilities. I have also been actively involved in the HR side of the business by conducting employee appraisals, investigations and disciplinary procedures.

What do you enjoy most about your placement?

By far, the best part about my placement is having real responsibility, authority and an opportunity to influence the operation. Once I had familiarised myself with the way the warehouse operates, I earned more and more responsibilities and was quickly given the chance to run a shift. The opportunity to obtain valuable managerial experience during a placement year is one that should not be missed as it puts you in a very strong position to begin your career. My plan is to re-join Gist on the graduate scheme once I have finished my university degree.

What would be your advice to people applying?

My advice to anyone applying is just to be yourself. The goal is to find out if you are the right person for this business, so there are no trick questions or times where they try to catch you out. As a business, Gist look for genuine individuals who show a strong sense of being people focused and have the readiness to learn and develop. And of course, make sure you do your research; know who Gist are, what we do and have an idea about the industry we operate in.
