A day in the life of a marketing placement student

Introduce yourself

Hi I’m Holly and am currently studying BSc Marketing at the University of Southampton. I’m completing my placement at Fresh Relevance – a real-time marketing hub for online retailers. The company have offices in both London (the sales team) and Southampton so I’m lucky enough to be split between the two.

So what have you learnt so far?

My placement started on 18th July so I’ve been here for around 3 and a half months, and I can honestly say I’ve learnt more in this time than I did in the first 2 years of studying. You don’t really realise just how beneficial a placement year is until you’re actually completing one.

What are your main responsibilities/roles

My general responsibilities include updating our social media pages, sending out emails to clients and prospects and creating materials that the sales team use.

My biggest challenge so far has been adapting to the change in lifestyle from University to working full time. However, after the first few weeks I soon adjusted.

What has been your biggest success so far?

One of the things I am most proud of is seeing material I’ve created or helped to create on the company website, or being used by the sales team to help win clients

Tell us something interesting about your company

Something exciting about the company is that we’re imminently opening an office in the United States, in Boston! This will hopefully be happening early next year, so watch this space…

Whats in store for the next few weeks?

Over the next few weeks we’re going to be knuckling down with our Black Friday and Christmas promotions. As all our clients are retail based, this time of year is our busiest, so the earlier we start preparing for it the better!

Whats good for lunch?

Lunch wise the Southampton Science Park (where the Southampton office is based) has a little café on site, or sometimes I bring myself a packed lunch. When in the London office there’s plenty of cafes or little sandwich shops, so there’s always something new to try.

Any Advice for students applying for a placement this year?

I’d 100% suggest checking out the blogs on RateMyPlacement, they really helped me with my cover letter and CV when I was applying this time last year.
