    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • During my internship I really enjoyed working with my team. Everyone was very helpful and friendly, and I feel that I have become part of the team here towards the end. I also found the different talks from people in the division very useful and a good way to get a bit of insight into how the different teams worked. I really enjoyed all of the social events with the other interns. I found the intern-class to be very nice, with very little focus on competition between people, which I believe help make my experience here even more enjoyable.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I think that my colleagues valued me in the sense that they valued the work that I helped them put together. I was given a lot of responsibility during my internship, and I do not feel that this would have happened if they hadn't valued my work and trusted that I could do things right. Some of the things that I worked on was things that they would have otherwise needed to do, so I feel that I really helped them during periods of stress and a lot of work pressure. I also thing that they valued how I was very quick when it came to understanding how things worked, so that I didn't have to ask them a lot of questions.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • During my internship at Goldman Sachs, I feel that my manager was very supportive of me and my working progress. My manager was obviously very busy all the time, but she took the time to sit down and talk to me if I had any questions or if I needed her help on something. She was also very good at giving me advice on who to reach out to if I needed help on a specific task, and she let me work on a lot of things for her. I do not feel that I was missing any guidance during my internship and overall I feel that the support was good.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I think that the workload varied a lot from day to day, but in total I was able to get everything done without having to stay too late in the evening. I didn't feel that the workload pressured me into coming in during the weekend either, so overall I felt that the workload well balanced. Because it varied a lot from day to day, I had some days when everything was very stressed and I had to work as fast as possible, but I guess that is just what you can expect when working in an environment as Goldman Sachs.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During my internship, I think I was given a reasonable amount of responsibility. To give examples, I got to do some work for my manager, and I helped my team in working on a request from a client. My team trusted me and I got even more responsibility after that. I think working at Goldman Sachs has been a great opportunity to get involved in "real" work and actually being the person responsible for something working or falling apart. You really get the feeling that you are contributing to your team.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I think that I will use a lot of the skills that I gained during my internship later on in my studies. This is true, not only when it comes to the skills gained by working on specific tasks, but also when it comes to the skills I have gained by being in a work-environment and figuring out the best way to interact with people. I'm sure that I will be much more confident and able to handle oral exams better when I get back home. I also think that I have learned a lot when it comes to handling job interviews, and that is definitely something I'll use once I get back home.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office is usually very quiet when people are busy working, and sometimes you can feel that people are very busy and that they don't want to be disturbed. But when the pressure from a stressful task is off, people are more talkative and joking around with each other. In general, I think the atmosphere is very normal for a workplace, with room for just chatting with people, but also a place where you can focus entirely on your work, without getting interrupted.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I would have liked to have gotten a bit more information about what to expect from the internship before starting. It would also have been very helpful to have the schedule from the very first day beforehand, as I had no idea what to expect. So I would say that the internship information set up needs a bit more structure, but other than that, I think everything else worked very well. I in particular liked the social event amongst the divisions interns right in the beginning of the internship, as I felt that this got everyone closer together.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • In the beginning of the internship, we had a week of training, together with the interns from an other division. At the time, I thought that this training would be really helpful, but I have come to realize, that I have not used a lot of it during my 10 weeks here. I felt that the content of the training was more focused on what the other divisions interns needed to learn and as so, I feel that we could have used the first week doing something more useful. During my internship, we have had a lot of talks with different people from the department which really helped when it comes to understanding how different sectors work.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I think working here was very interesting and something I would like to work with later on. If I should mention one thing that I found to be not as attractive, it would be the long hours. But I have been able to manage it so far, and I think it is something you just have to live with if you want to work at a place like this. And the more efficient you get with what you're working on, the quicker it can be done, and the earlier you can leave. Overall I find that Goldman Sachs is a great place to work, with great people.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Before starting the internship, I was nervous that the other interns were going to be very competitive and that people would not help each other because of this. But I was very wrong. The intern-class this year is so nice, everyone is very helpful and people tend to get along very well. Because of this I have made some great friends among the other interns, and I feel that this has help me through the more difficult times of the last 10 weeks.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I thought it was very expensive to rent a place in London, compared to where I come from. But as I didn't want to spend too long getting to and from work each day, I prioritised finding a place within 30 min of public transportation away from work. I found that the cost of eating out was very low and that it almost cost the same to cook dinner yourself. But it is of course expensive when you buy lunch every day and eat out most of the time, but I was prepared for this before going here, so that didn't as a big surprise for me.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Because of the long hours and early mornings, and because I have always been very sensitive when it comes to getting enough sleep, I priorities getting home and in bed at a reasonable hour instead of going out for drinks. I did go out with some of the other interns for dinner some nights, but other than that, I mostly spend my evenings getting everything done, that I hasn't able to do during the day. I'm usually not a person that goes out for a drink after work, as that is not something you do from where I'm from, so I think that is part of the reason.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • No not really.
