    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Although I am from London, I enjoyed coming in to central London every day for my internship. I enjoyed meeting new people here, in a nice working environment, knowing I'm being payed and getting experience, and having something to fill my summer with,

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Colleagues were always polite and friendly towards me, and gave me work directly. When forwarding work I had done to others, they always made it clear that I had done it. They always explained the wider process to me and made it clear how what I was doing would fit in and be used by others.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had regular weekly meetings with my line manager and another colleague, When we did have meetings, my line manager was really nice and gave good advice, however often I felt she didn't have time for me as she often cancelled or resceduled our meetings, and I sometimes felt that I was bothering her busy scedule by asking questions or asking for more work.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It varied a lot, from having nearly nothing to do, to having a lot of really urgent work that needed to be done quickly, so it varied based on how busy the team was generally, and how much work they had that I was capable of doing. People would email me with work directly and then come over to explain, and then check it when I was done.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I felt I was doing important work, sometimes the same as full time colleagues who were fully qualified. I also was trusted with large volumes of sensitive and confidential information. Although it was reassuring that everything I did was later checked by someone else, as is all work done by the permenent employees too.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I feel I have learned to use excel a lot better, and it is a really mathematical placement and I study maths. Whether it will be directly helpful so much I'm not sure, I learned very specific actuarial things to do with pensions which will probably not come up in my degree. I do however think it has increased my motivation to study for my degree next year because I have got used to working 9-5 and know that I need good grades if I ever want to get into a job like this.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It's very quiet while people are working, colleagues don't really talk much unless its to do with work or they are on the phone. I think this may be partly because they are a new team so no one knows eachother too well, and also because they are very busy at the moment. I'm not used to working in silence so I would have preferred a bit more background noise.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Relatively well, Lloyds banking group have a large number of intens working for them during summer time. We had an opening event which was quite general but we learned useful things about working at lloyds. We could always email someone and they would send a helpful response to any questions or concerns we had about the internship.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I completed online mandatory trainings. They gave my time to learn and were always more focused on what I was getting out of it in terms of learning rather than the volumes of work I was producing, even though I am paid to be here.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I'm still unsure since I have still only completed my first year at university. As a lloyds scholar, I have been promised another internship which will likely lead to a refferal onto the graduate scheme here. I'm unsure whether I would take it, its a nice working environment and offers good pay but I feel Lloyds is more suitable to work at for older people rather than graduates.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Not really. We were encourages to meet other interns through the charity challenge but didn't get to know them too well. Most of them lived in lloyds provided accommodation but I lived at home so they knew each other better than me. With colleagues also, they didn't know each other too well since its a new team so the social scene was pretty much non-existent.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • High - I was in central London. Transport was very expensive. The canteen in the building wasn't awfully priced, but the cost of living around here is generally very high. Socialising especially, bars/clubs around here are expensive.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Again, I didn't go out much with colleagues or other interns so I'm unsure. I believe there are a lot of clubs and bars around but they are very expensive and transport home afterwards would be expensive/inconvenient.
