The Role
I really enjoyed my time at M&G, they pride themselves on a great working culture and now I know why. Everyone is so friendly and the whole experience for me was memorable.
Not only do you feel like part of a family with your fellow interns but my team has also made me feel like one of their own. They do a number of social activities every month, all of which I have attended and had a great time, I will be sad to leave!
I had weekly informal catch up meeting with my manager which I found very useful. It was an opportunity to review my progress and speak about any issues (not that I had any) and he helped me construct a detailed list of what I have done along with a deep understanding of the task in order to add to my CV, making me a better candidate in the future. Everybody is so approachable and eager to help.
I would never say I was bogged down with work, and sometimes my work load was small, but during busy times such as month end you have to appreciate it is hard for your team to find to find work for you.
I was trusted with tasks I was given, but support was there if necessary.
With a background in chemistry and no real prior knowledge of the finance/accounting industry, I now believe I would be able to speak confidently about the sector and how the company operates. During the first couple of weeks we had around 10 presentations delivered from different business units which are really helpful in understanding M&G's structure. There are plenty of opportunities to speak with other employees, everybody is very happy to share their past and current experiences. I believe that my excel skills have dramatically improved during my time here, which will also probably help my in my final year of study, as well as giving a head-start in the finance sector. The placement has most of all taught me that I will definitely be considering a career in finance when I graduate and hopefully one day at M&G.
The Company
Very chilled and pleasant atmosphere, as good as you can get for an office really!
The whole internship scheme itself was very organised and well structured. On the finance part I also feel like this was well done, maybe future planning of what interns could do during very busy times would slightly improve it, but there is always learning resources and workshops for you to complete online.
They put a lot of time into intern education in terms of all of the presentations. My team were also always helping me to understand terminology that I wasn't familiar with.

The Culture
I probably see people from work or other interns at least twice a week after work. I am new to London after moving here from the North and have really made the most of being here, so much to do! The social scene is good!
I live in bow which is only a 30 min commute door to door which costs around £5 a day, my wages cover living in London. It all depends where you go regarding price for socialising, it can be expensive but a lot of the time its worth it.
A lot of bars around monument/bank where people go to after work, reasonably priced too for London!
I did a lot of activities with my team, their monthly socials have included a hint hunt, climbing the 02, visiting the nearby gorgeous rooftop bar and team breakfast at 'The Breakfast Club'. A few intern events also such as ping pong at Bounce, a movie night with LOTS of pizza, a pub quiz night and end of internship drinks.
