The Role
From the very beginning I was expected to hit the ground running in terms of picking up responsibilities and taking on a real role. An internship is what you make it as a lot of your experiences will depend on what you put in. My placement was split into three sections around the department and each role held its own challenges. The team atmosphere was what really got me going to start with, everyone was so friendly and open to helping, really made me feel at home. The intern and graduate events were also great starting to networking in the business.
100%. I was very much supported during training up for each role, but you aren't just an intern at Virgin Media, you're an employee with a valid point of view. Colleagues treated me as an equal with my own knowledge base which I used to help them as they helped me.
My line manager was brilliant! interested in not only my career development but personal development too. They really looked into what they thought would be best for me, asking my input throughout to check I was satisfied with the progression of my internship while pushing me to really achieve as much as I could in a year. There is also a buddy scheme here which offers more of a peer support, someone you can go to when you don't want to speak to your manager or don't feel like it is something you can discuss with them
As I said, I wasn't treated any differently from anyone else as an intern, I was expected to keep up with the same level of responsibility as the other team members so I was very rarely in want of something to do. There were a couple of occasions where my workflow slowed but I am the type of person who loves to work and keep busy so I always found things to do, all of my supervisors were very approachable if I ever needed to dicuss this.
In the first two aspects of my placement I took on the role of the colleagues I was working with as a peer, for my final placement I had a bit less responsibility but this was more due to the nature of the role and the limits of my knowledge having not studied employment law. I still enjoyed it, learnt a lot and my colleagues really helped me in taking on what I could
Very much so. I've learnt a great deal about networking, working with people of different levels, managing projects with a real impact and understanding the fundamentals of business. I was able to complete courses in Excel and Prince 2 project management which will be very valuable for my future career. In terms of finishing my degree, i've gained presentation skills and learnt how to be more concise in my writing which will really help essays. Moreover, seeing people study for their Masters while working a 9-5 job has helped with my determination to really get on with things rather than complaining there isn't enough free time at uni to do everything haha.
The Company
Pretty great. Everyone takes their jobs very seriously in terms of delivering on promises and really providing an effective service, but there are lots of fun mini events along the way.
Understandably it has not been perfected as yet as these are still a new venture for the company. Of course plans were laid out before we began in terms of deciding who our contacts were, our job desciptions etc and we recieved welcome calls from our managers before we began to tell us a bit about what we would be starting with. There were points to be improved on but the team in charge of this were very keen for feedback throughout and made changes to develop the scheme as we went along. I'm certain that the next year's intake will have an even better expereince because of it but it's getting there.
Virgin is very keen on personal development in this respect so I was able to undertake several training and development courses, including professional courses in project management and stakeholder management. Again, beyond the basic compulsory trainings, this is down to the individual to take on as much as they please.

I've really loved working at Virgin Media and will be applying for the graduate scheme :)
The Culture
Team socials were great, the interns and graduates were all quite a chummy group, meeting at weekends and for each other's birthdays etc. there were also a couple of social clubs set up- football and go karting which involved interns and graduates. Not everyone lived in the same area which limited meeting up outside work a bit as it depended on being in the area. I made some really great friends but the area we live in isn't the most lively, just a few bars.
Not too expensive, there are social places around such as a bowling ally, dry ski slopes, skydiving and rock climbing centre etc, but you would need a car or a couple buses to get to those. The main town centre just has shops, some bars, a club and a cinema.
there are a few bars and a club but if you are looking to go elsewhere you will have to get the train back quite early or stay over as trains stop at midnight.
A few, it was very much dependant on what you were willing to set up. Currently there isn't a lot set up, particularly for females
