The Role
The overall experience was fantastic and highly recommended. The work was interesting and there was invaluable training throughout the 10 weeks. The internship was challenging, but the skills I gained will benefit me both at university and for the rest of my career. There were also numerous social events and opportunities to meet senior employees.
I was given responsibilities and training from the very start of the internship, and felt that the work I was doing was making a real contribution to the team. Although they were busy, my colleagues were happy to help me and answer my questions.
Over the course of the internship I was given guidance by every member of my team, and given regular feedback by my manager. This ensured that I was always on track with my work as well as aware of what was expected of me. Asking questions and getting support was encouraged by my team and the firm as a whole.
The nature of the project and the technical skills required for the work meant I had to get up to speed quickly and then tackle problems that at times only I was working on. This meant the workload was quite heavy, but not unmanageable. In addition, there was a global intern project which added to the work I was completing within my team, so there was very rarely a time when I wasn't busy.
I was given a good level of responsibility on an important project that my team was involved in. After a few weeks of working alongside another team member, I was given ownership of my own part of the project, for which I was solely responsible.
I learned technical skills involving computing languages, but also learned various soft skills and the importance of networking. Attending meetings and networking with senior colleagues were valuable opportunities, and the nature of the work has prepared me very well going into my final year at University.
The Company
The other employees working on the same floor as myself were friendly and most importantly, willing to help or answer any questions. I felt comfortable approaching people I hadn't met before and asking for their help if they had expertise in an area I wasn't familiar with. Employees would often bring in snacks/food for people to help themselves and generally the atmosphere was very good.
The internship was extremely well structured and all interns were given an outline of major events at the start of the internship. There were a wide variety of events ranging from social, to conferences with senior employees, to networking with fellow interns.
Over the 10 weeks there were numerous training sessions, both technical and non-technical. The firm strongly emphasised the importance of personal career growth and provides many opportunities for employees to develop personal skills as well as learn about areas of the business they may be unfamiliar with.

The challenging nature of the work, as well as the people working there and training opportunities at hand make a career at Goldman Sachs highly appealing.
The Culture
In addition to the organised social events throughout the internship, there were many spontaneous social events and drinks after work.
Being in London, the cost of living and general cost of living are more expensive than other parts of the country.
Goldman's offices are located in the City, and there were numerous pubs/bars/clubs where we could go for after work drinks. Generally these venues were filled with people from the Finance industry and hence became good places to network in an informal setting.
Every intern had the opportunity to participate in a whole day of voluntary/philanthropic activities within London. There were also opportunities for sport and collaboration with other banks for charity work.
