    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was everything and more that I could have hoped for from a placement year. Work was varied and very interesting. I looked forward to going to work! I learnt so much that I could never have learned from a degree. I learned Chemistry but I also learned about the structure of large companies and how they function on a global scale, the relevance of the consumer and much much more!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Certainly felt valued, particularly towards the end of the placement. Placements students were given a lot of responsibility from day one. Though sometimes we would be kept out of the loop on announcements etc, thoughI think that was a organisational problem and not the fault of our peers. Everyone was very welcoming and approachable!

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Was given the support that I needed, there may have been times that I could have done with more though in hindsight I think it were a good thing that I wasn't spoon fed throughout the placement. It helped me to establish my own independence within the department to work by myself with minimal guidance from my supervisors.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Busy. . very busy, but that is how I like it and loved it!

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Big responsibility and independence was given to the placement students from day one, we played a large role in influencing the progression of projects and we were expected to operate with minimal input and direction from out managers. Our work and opinions were valued and counted for when making important decisions.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills that I have picked up may not help me so much for my final year at University, though they will certainly become invaluable skills when I go on to search for a career after my studies.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I want on the Graduate scheme now! I wish I didn't have to go back to finish my final year at university. I am currently applying for the graduate scheme just now. I absolutely loved my year there and would love to be given the chance to go back in full-time employment.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Excellent social scene amongst all the the students from every department. We were all living and working together and there wasn't a dull evening or weekend, it was the fastest year of my life.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I think I may be biased as I had previously lived in a larger city (Glasgow) and so moving to Hull was definitely cheaper though opportunities for sightseeing and socialising were more limited.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Fine, once again I think I was spoiled previously by the much more elaborate night life of Glasgow, but there were enough pubs and clubs. It is the people that your with that matters anyway.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Opportunities were available though not required as work was very much a community within itself and the people you worked with were the people you did everything with
