The Role
I think it's fair to say that with any job you will have days where you love it and days where you just don't. During my time with M&S I had my fair share of challenging days, but overall those were outweighed by how much I learnt and overall how many great experiences I had working with some fantastic people.
My answer to this question would vary based on the huge number of people I have worked with in all the different stores that I have spent time in over the past year. But overall, wherever I've been, there have always been people that I thought were fantastic and felt priviledged to work with.
Once again this varied based on where I was but overall I always had certain individuals I felt I could go to for support and in my last few months I really felt like my learning moved forward based on the team around me in my final placement.
Because of the fair amount of movement I experienced over my time there were times that I felt a little bit adrift and unsure of my exact role/responsibilities. However, this really helped me learn to connect with the other managers around me to build my own structure.
Whilst I was on a learning placement I got to be really involved in the actual job and this was hugely valuable.
I have learnt more in the last year than I think I ever have in my whole life of education.
The Company
While it could be stressful we pretty much always found time to stop and have a laugh and every store had some characters to keep life interesting.
The schedule I was given at the beginning of the placement was not followed at all but I'm not sure that I actually see that as a bad thing.
I was responsible for driving my own informal learning to a degree but, because it's such a well established programme there was also a huge amount of formal learning available for my benefit.
Subsidised Canteen
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Healthcare/Dental
I have been offered a job for when I graduate next year!
The Culture
We didn't have a huge amount of time because working hours could be pretty crazy but I now live with a girl I met on the programme so I've definitely made some great friends.
I've always lived in London and it's expensive but I've always managed.
It's London.
