    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was a great first taste of being in a corporate environment. It was tough as there is so much to learn, but there was a lot of support. Also, there were a lot of intern events which made the experience more enjoyable.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues were always willing to make time for me whenever I needed. I was also invited to team drinks/lunches/dinners which helped me integrate. Although it was difficult to adjust as the majority of my team are very senior people.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The support system I experienced was solid. My manager was very proactive in supporting me and checking that I knew what I was doing. I also had a manager and two mentors who played a key part in supporting me throughout my internship.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There was a lot of work to be done, and many intern projects/events on top of that. As a result of this, I was kept very busy until my last day. At times it did feel like I had a bit too much to do.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I completed multiple projects, and each of them had an actual effect either on my immediate team or on the wider business. And this was from my second week. However, I wasn't given too much responsibility in the sense that any mistakes on my part would not have a disastrous impact.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • There are many skills that I picked up during the internship that I would not have learned otherwise. A lot of these were based on soft skills and how to approach certain things in a business/corporate environment. I have also developed my time management skills and learned new strategies for staying on top of a heavy workload, which will definately help me in my degree studies and future work.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The employees in my office were all very friendly and talkative, so there was always something to have a laugh about. The floor can get quite quiet sometimes, but never dull as there was always something that needed to be done.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • My internship was very well structured. I received technical training that was relevant to the projects that I would be working on. There was also a lot of cross divisional training that was all planned before our arrival. In addition to this, I was never left for long periods of time without any work to complete. My buddy and manager reached out to me before I started, so I was well received on my first day.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We were given everything from technical training (such as Java and Unix) to soft skills training such as presentation delivery and networking. There were also weekly drop in sessions where we could come and ask for help on project work or other aspects of the internship.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Financial Bonus

    Healthcare from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Cannot say at present.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Weekly socials both within the organisation and out. Some included regular employees such as Analysts and VP's, others were just for the interns.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • From the perspective of a Londoner, it was not too expensive although this area of London generally costs more than others. Due to the good transport links, it isn't necesary to live near the office e.g. there are trains that can take you from zone 4 to zone 1 in 20 minutes so you could live further away for less and still get to work with ease.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Very good. Many bars, pubs and restaurants in the area, walking distance from the office. Not too expensive either.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Aside from the numerous events, I did not actively seek many other activities. There are networks and sports teams within the organisation for those who are interested.

    4/5
